In certain situations you may be able to obtain emergency drinking water from fire hydrants. Should you do so, and is this even legal you may ask? For the most part, opening a fire hydrant on a municipal water line is against the law and should never be attempted. Secondly, if the hydrant is still pressurized, the force of the unregulated water could cause injury or even death. Also, if citizens begin randomly opening fire hydrants, this may result in a loss of pressure when it is needed for actual firefighting.

So when we’ve seen this done in big cities for fun, does somebody have that special wrench?

Pretty sure any good sized pipe wrench will work. You don’t need the 5 sided wrench.

While maintenance workers and firemen use a special wrench to open the hydrants...you don’t need one. An ordinary pipe wrench will do it.

If it comes to that no one is going to give a shyt about permission. Just try to stop them. You better be very well armed if you get between truly thirsty people and water.

In many small towns, especially those on rivers, hydrant water is not potable as it’s not treated.

There is a hydrant in my front yard. Every 5 years or so the VFD open it up and purge it. The first thing to come out looks like a big rusty turd.

Hey, when we were kids and drank out of the hose, the first thing out was usually a big wad of doodle bugs and spiders.

Hose water had bugs, hot and tasted like plastic.

Oh well. Better than no water.

Was not and would not suggest anyone doing it.

It’s just that the 5 sided bolt isn’t going to stop anyone from doing it if they want to.

You break the valve open so that it starts dripping water!
Put a container under it and collect the water until the container is full then close it off again.

Only an idiot would open it fully in an emergency situation. Conservation of resources!
