Cultural suicide used to be a popular diagnosis of why things suddenly just quit.
Historians such as Oswald Spengler and Arnold Toynbee cited social cannibalism to explain why once-successful states, institutions and cultures simply died off.
Their common explanation was that the arrogance of success ensures lethal consequences. Once elites became pampered and arrogant, they feel exempt from their ancestors

Learn to MAKE, BUILD, REPAIR or DO something, Kids! You cannot go wrong with a Tech College degree!
I love it when Socialists destroy and eat their own. :)
Hollywood doesn’t need to make another movie or show. The old ones are much better.
The Gods of the Copybook Headings must be looking on with eager anticipation right about now.
So much better. Yes.
TCM is my go to on tv. Most everything else is trash.
Pro sports, universities, and Hollywood. To the dustbin! Or reinvent them in better ways, ground up.
3 industries I wouldn’t mind seeing collapse and either disappear or be radically changed.
I think it comes down to whether or not those three Industries will destroy themselves before they finish helping destroy our society.
Right at this moment I’m not confident that they will go first. It’s heartbreaking to watch a land with so much potential literally destroy itself.
VDH is wrong. Pro sports, colleges, and Hollywood are not going anywhere, their wokeness notwithstanding. Instead, the GOP is about to go extinct.
****But viewers do seek out theaters for more lectures from beautiful multimillionaires on their racist, sexist, homophobic country.****
I’m confident that the word “not” was supposed to be in there somewhere.

Because intellectuals do not fair well in labor/death camps (Somewhat tongue in cheek.).
When I look through the movie offerings on TV, I find myself looking at when it was made. Honestly, if it isn’t at least 20 years old, I have to know it to be something I want to see. Didn’t set out to do that, just realized when I saw your comment that that is what I, in fact, do.
Magical thinking on VDH's part.
The Gods of the Copybook Headings is one of my favorite poems. I memorized it in junior high.
Good real life skills to have anyways, especially if TSHTF.
I concur, the older movies are the only ones I even watch anymore.
Excellent article! I’ve been saying the same for a some time now but Victor Davis Hanson said it so much better than I could have.
Another to add to the list is the fake news media — CNN, MSNBC, NYT, Washington Post, etc. They cannot be losing their credibility any more quickly.
That’s the truth!
