Best .380 Pocket Pistols for Personal Defense
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 7/15/20 | C Cocole

These .380 mouse guns or "get off me" guns can be a good choice for personal defense. Prices vary from $200 to $700, some current full size handgun model may be a better choice to go.
But, if you’re looking for good concealment carry with a decent bite, then the .380 caliber is a good choice to consider. Before we get into the list, a quick word about .380 pocket size pistols and a pragmatic opinion.

Besides the concealment attribute, most of these pistols aren't that great. Full size semi-auto pistols are reliable, but the child size pistols are hindered with malfunctions during that melee.
While fishing to get the gun out of your pocket and wind up with a weird grip or you’re trying to create space when this 250 pound guy is hammering you from above – these are the things that tends to lead to malfunctions.
Ok, lets get to the meat of this – Here's a quick list of good .380 ACP pocket pistol for concealed carry to see if it works for you:

Let's go over some pros and con.
Down Side
The .380s are usually light in weight, this makes it harder to dampen the recoil thus affecting the accuracy of the shot.
Another thing that can affect the recoil is the design.
Having a high grip helps in handling recoil better than low grip.
The grip size also helps in better control of the gun. The bigger the better.
Last its obvious that the caliber is not the same caliber as a .45ACP.

Upside
So the positive is that its a highly concealed gun, but you still need to be aware of deep concealment. This would make it harder to access in a stressful situation. Another upside is the caliber, I know what we said earlier about bigger caliber...Read the rest of best of .380 pocket pistols.

If, after you draw, you need to cock the gun. ... you have a paperweight!

"9mm is a better round."

No kidding. But they don't make a 9mm the size of my wallet.

I can carry my 9mm if I'm wearing a sport jacket, or in the winter under a big flannel.
But for something to carry in the pocket of my jeans or shorts - nothing like a .380.

No. Wont fir in pocket. It is a 9MM and will do the job if you just want to have a firearm in your home for protection. I also recommenda 9MM 45 Semi for the same purpose.

Cock as you draw. Once I reach for the gun, it’s cocked in short order.

It’s kinda like a small version of that sound of someone cocking a pump action shotgun. :)

I don’t carry with one in the chamber so I’m practicing drawing, loading, and firing as I walk around a corner towards a target.

Hmmm, ok. Good that you carry, Good that you are practicing. I am going to politely suggest you talk with a good defensive shooting instructor about your 'strategy'. The two things that jump out are 'why are you not loaded?' and why are you 'running toward a threat?' Just looking out for you, but with a hard holster that guards the trigger, there is no reason to be empty chamber, and if someone is right in front of you (not around a corner) threatening your life, that extra second to rack the slide just cost you the gun fight. Stay safe FRiend.

It’s very reliable and I can throw it in my pants pocket. But I don’t keep one in the chamber, so if I ever needed it I’d have to cock it first.

As I suggested to another here, get a small IWB kydex holster that covers the trigger and trigger guard. Now you can keep one in the chamber safely. Put it inside the belt when you need to carry. The average gun fight is less than 3 seconds. If you spend 3/4 of a second to rack the slide your are already late to the game.

Holster makes it too big. I’m fine with cocking. It’s easy for me. It was difficult for my wife.

I've owned four of these. The Ruger and the Sig are the standouts.

The Ruger is inexpensive and reliable. My only complaint is the weight of the trigger pull. It is quite heavy and not terribly smooth. I have never had a jam even when limp wristing.

The Sig has amazing quality and a wonderful trigger pull. I have a custom shop version. It's major drawback is that it is so nice I don't want to carry it around and scratch it up.

The Glock 19 is a 9MM that I wouldn’t recommend for carrying around. It is a Good home protector as is a 9MM 45 Semi.

You don’t really need too carry it that way. I have been carrying an LCP with CT Laserguard fully loaded and ready to go in a pocket holster every day for about 4 years now. I put 500 rounds through it when I first got it to make sure it ran and get the laser zeroed well. Now I clean it thoroughly and put a couple of magazines a year through it to make sure it still works. I have had no issues and it is dependable. Probably not the best defense gun I own but it beats a pointy stick and I always have it with me.

You have to be of either good girth to CC a G19 on the hip, or be willing to appendix carry. But it is nice to have the longer sight line than a G43 or equivalent.

I know it’s not popular with a lot of people, but I’ve had a Taurus 709 “slim”. For several years now. Never had a problem with it! I love that little gun!
