For years and years since about 1971, I've been listening to "Maggie May" by Rod Stewart. Well, not every minute of these past 49 years but at least 500 times I've heard that song either on the radio or from my music collection.
Not even my favorite Rod Stewart song but I've heard it probably the most out of the Rod Stewart songs on account of it being so popular and all. ("In A Broken Dream" is my favorite Rod Stewart song and he recorded it with a band that called themselves Python Lee Jackson).
So anyway, I've heard the song a bunch of times. And there is a verse in that song that I always heard like this:
I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of frying food
Or find myself a rock and roll band that needs a helpin' hand
At least, that's the way I always heard it. But thanks to the Internet, I happened to look at the lyrics tonight and saw that the lyrics referred to "playing pool" and not "frying food"
Then I go to listen to the song again and I still hear "frying food" instead of "playing pool."
You should give it a listen for yourselves. I'm sticking with frying food - I don't care what the lyrics say. I think they call that a mondegreen.
Besides, Rod Stewart looks a little like Gordon Ramsay. I think they call that a doppelganger. So I say frying food - not playing pool.
CCR sang about the bathroom on the right ...
I was not a fan in my youth so it must be Bad moon Rising?
I never mistook the words in this song, but I did mis-hear lyrics to “Reach out in the Darkeness” so it sounded like “Freak out in the Garden”... once those words were in my mind, it made it very difficult to finally hear the real words.... kind of like how some of us see a headline and never bother to see what was actually in the article/story.
Starbucks lovers, Im a Barbie on the boardwalk, 100 donut speeches I never said to you.
LOL....I've never heard that one!
Fun story....when Steve Hoffman remastered that album, the master tape had deteriorated so much he needed to literally "bake the tape" to reglue the metallic particles.
Fun facts...
Rick Derringer was really Rick Zehringer who grew up 30 minutes north of Dayton,OH. He started a teen band called The McCoys and had a hit with “Hang On Sloopy”.
As a teen, I saw them at a small teen club in Dayton as an opening act for Simon & Garfunkel. The band stayed on the 12” stage as the backing band for S&G - good show and Rick’s superb lead guitar playing was easily the stand out memory of that show.
Later, Rick Zehringer went solo and traveled to LA, changed his name to “Derringer” and became a VERY highly respected session guitarist playing for Steely Dan among others.

Maybe tonight
Maybe tonight, by the fire
All alone, you and I
Nothing around but the sound
Of my heart and your size...
I always liked that one... that is, until the part where he starts singing.
;-)
Just got word that my tickets for him this summer are still good, for next year as they are postponing his tour 12 months. I thought it might be a fun show. There’s a show about his career on HULU that was interesting.
Scuse me while I kiss a Fly...
When I first heard it, I actually thought the lyric was, “Steal my daddy’s cue and make a living out of praying fools” - suggesting that his father was a preacher.
“Well even though I know the line is Revved up like a deuce I still hear douche. Does not matter who is singing Blinded by the Light.”
I just now learned it’s not “wrapped up like a douche”.
ROTFL!
Fun, thanks.
Nooooooo! Thats my fave Taylor song!! Na na na na na, hands in ears, never heard it, never heard it.... (dang, standing in an ice chest rofl)
I cannot NOT hear 100 donut speeches tho
Bands from the same time period as Rod Stewart (1970’s)?
Very difficult to name only three. The music was great at that time - everything from Deep Purple to Zeppelin to Bowie to Genesis to Pink Floyd to Steely Dan to Skynyrd to Aerosmith to... all the music, except Rod Stewart’s. lol
Okay, I’m exaggerating a bit. His songs weren’t that bad. Maybe they’d sound better with a different singer.
Hope you’re not Rod. :-)
Thanks for the link, that was an awesome live performance of the "Maggie May" song.
You must be also as you not only read this thread but replied to it as well!
OK you’re off the hook with a good spread of musical taste.
I am not Rod, I’m his big brother. I rassel gators for a living and had to wait til after work to “borrow” a good sized gator and track you down.
I’m just going to leave him under your car with a reasonably long chain.
Just a hint: Its fairly easy to keep their mouth closed, the only problem is what to do when you have to let go.
Stay safe.
;-)
Or
Someone shaved my wife tonight.
