Is anyone else getting calls in Chinese? Originating from Chicago or from blocked source. Pleasant voice. Started after a long phone discussion about China and COVID. My friend and I both started getting calls in March. I've had 4 so far.
Everyone gets them. Spam calls that have been going on for years. Surprised you didn’t get them sooner.
I was getting them frequently until a few moths ago when I switched ISP’s.
I replied in Mandarin, they were shocked.
No but Sally from Pakistan calls telling me that my computer is infected with a virus.
I’ve gotten two or three voice mails that sound Chinese (or other far eastern language). I think it is garden variety spam. They only need a 1 in a million hit to make it worth their while.
(But chinese speech usually sounds harsh to Western ears.)
no. no one hat has survived to talk about it.
Cantonese or Mandorin ?
Sometimes I do. I just hang up. The speaker is usually a female voice. It sounds like she’s reading some kind of sales script. I can usually hear other voices in the background.
It’s what I used to do for a living, but in English:
“Cold Calling”. Back in the 1980’s, I worked for Equitable Finance. I was trying to sell Mutual Funds. “We are having a Workshop in your area next week!”. I didn’t really like it.
I got one of those calls too. Very weird. And since theyre probably using some sort phone number scrambler, who knows where theyre actually calling from.
They spoke to me in Chinese only. I said hello in English. Then I started speaking in Hungarian. It was a true United Nations moment!
never heard of it and dont answer any # that I dont know. Voicemail on my cell isnt even set up to avoid these scam calls.
We got a few of those Chinese calls months ago - last summer and fall - but none recently, as far as I know.
Been getting them up here in Canada for a while. Not always but often it’s a local number.
I always answer my phone in Japanese.
Never get hassled since. Even my answer message too. Good fun.
Last year I got a call from a man with an Indian accent who said, “We have detected unusual activity on your Apple account.” I said, “I don’t have an Apple account.” He said, “What account DO you have?” I hung up.
Moshi-moshi...
They could be activation triggers for deep moles.
:-O
I tell them my name (usually Nigel Tufnel but sometimes it is Gomez Adams or Frederick Kruger Esq) and my address, 1060 W Addison St in Chicago.
Yes, I am. Odd that someone thinks there are enough Chinese in the US to do that.
