New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who already face criticism for leading what some have described as the worst, most botched response to the coronavirus crisis, now face even more scrutiny over allegations health officials took no action after being warned that a nursing home was being overwhelmed and needed some patients to be transferred elsewhere.
According to multiple investigations, administrators at the nursing home in question, Brooklyns Cobble Hill Health Center, sent desperate emails to state Health Department officials in early April asking if some patients could be transferred to one of two field hospitals one at the Javits Center and the other on the USNS Comfort.
There is no way for us to prevent the spread under these conditions. Is there anything more we can do to protect our patients and staff? the homes CEO, Danny Tuchman, pleaded in one email dated April 8th, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal published Thursday.
At the time Tuchman sent his plea, only 134 of the 1,000 beds at the Javits Center were full and the Comfort which had just been reconfigured to treat up to 500 COVID-19 patients had a mere 62 on board, the New York Post added in its own report Friday.
By the time Cuomo announced during a briefing this Tuesday that the Comfort was no longer needed and would, therefore, be leaving sometime soon perhaps as early as next week for its base in Norfolk, Virginia, the Comfort had only treated 179 total patients.
This means there was always plenty of space onboard for Cobble Hill Health Centers patients.
All of this matters because Cobble Hill Health Center has been linked to numerous coronavirus deaths, and all presumably because of how overwhelmed the nursing home has been.
Tuchman said some staff wore garbage bags for protection. Some worked 16-hour shifts. And at times, patients were dying so quickly that the centers refrigerated storage was beyond capacity, forcing workers to rotate bodies in and out as they waited for space at funeral homes or morgues, The Wall Street Journal has confirmed.
But instead of honoring the homes request, state health officials reportedly emailed so-called guidance on how to conserve supplies during a shortage, and a reminder to submit requests daily to New York Citys Office of Emergency Management.
In response to questions from the Journal, a New York State Department of Health defended the departments handling of the matter, saying it had acted quickly and aggressively to provide the home with guidance.
But the home never asked for guidance. It asked for a transfer of patients. It also reportedly asked for personal protective equipment.
Weve distributed PPE to Cobble Hill Health Center as part of our weekly routine PPE deliveries, the spokesperson reportedly added.
But according to Tuchman, this too is somewhat of a false claim: Mr. Tuchman said he got some PPE from the city, but not enough, the Journal reported.
A Democrat facing scrutiny? In New York? Pfffffft. That’ll be the day.
Dem media will bury Dem mistakes...
What are the chances the NYT will run this? I’ll say somewhere between slim and none.
Let me know where to send. you a foil hat.
Typical bureaucratic claptrap. It’s like responses received from politicians after raising a certain topic/issue with them: “Thank you for your concern”. And then they go on to relate to you the same issue you raised with them as if they’re being informative. ANYTHING but helpful!
“”But instead of honoring the homes request, state health officials reportedly emailed so-called guidance on how to conserve supplies during a shortage, and a reminder to submit requests daily to New York Citys Office of Emergency Management.””
I don’t know, there’s Democrats scurrying about there.
Maybe there’s nothin’, but then again, maybe not.
But if you’re going to send me a tin foil hat, I’d like to request a top hat style with a nice brim in heavy duty foil if possible.
I want something stylish.
He needs to be reminded every day that each one of those seniors was their family’s Matilda.
Yeah when I see NYT, CNN, MSNBC reporting then Ill be like finally some truth.
A lot of democratic voters have died during this. I hope RNC ensures they dont vote in November. Ha. RNC wont do a thing.
“Cuomo, de Blasio face scrutiny for botched nursing home response, desperate requests were ignored”
Wow, now they’re getting to the real nitty gritty. There’s a reason NY leads the world in cases and deaths......the incompetence of Fredo’s brother and DeBlasio, as they ignored numerous warnings.
What warnings did they ignore? The WHO was saying people could still travel around etc. through January and February from Europe and that is when the virus was actually coming into New York.
This stupid Monday morning quarterbacking of blaming Trump or Cuomo or whoever in the USA has got to stop. We really didn’t know what was going on until it was to late and for that we get to thank China and the WHO.
Democrats lie.. Patriots die.
Democrats lie.. Patriots die.
This is so much bigger than the denied requests. Inspections in NYS are a joke. Regulations can be insanely counterproductive. Medicare changes the rules so that facilities could refuse to take back WuFlu patients if conditions warranted. And stuffed into the new state budget was legislation protecting nursing homes from both civil and criminal liability.
This nightmare isn’t just Downstate, either. Steuben County in Upstate NY has a horrific problem. One that, per a local news report, necessitated athe least one phone call from the governor’s office to a Steuben county nursing home that took place when no local officials were allowed to be present.
What is Albany hiding?
Perfection!
Go after Mario the Pius. The annointed Democrap? Lets see 50,000 deaths times oh $20 million a person....man they are going to have to smuggle lots of rich people into NY to pay that off. Personally, charge Mario and Wilhelm with homocide and be done with it. I personally think that the old folks were specifically targetted because they were too much of a drain on state resources. Sick but would you put it past them?
Is it just me or does Cuomo look like neanderthal man?
