New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who already face criticism for leading what some have described as the worst, most botched response to the coronavirus crisis, now face even more scrutiny over allegations health officials took no action after being warned that a nursing home was being overwhelmed and needed some patients to be transferred elsewhere.
According to multiple investigations, administrators at the nursing home in question, Brooklyns Cobble Hill Health Center, sent desperate emails to state Health Department officials in early April asking if some patients could be transferred to one of two field hospitals one at the Javits Center and the other on the USNS Comfort.
There is no way for us to prevent the spread under these conditions. Is there anything more we can do to protect our patients and staff? the homes CEO, Danny Tuchman, pleaded in one email dated April 8th, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal published Thursday.
At the time Tuchman sent his plea, only 134 of the 1,000 beds at the Javits Center were full and the Comfort which had just been reconfigured to treat up to 500 COVID-19 patients had a mere 62 on board, the New York Post added in its own report Friday.
By the time Cuomo announced during a briefing this Tuesday that the Comfort was no longer needed and would, therefore, be leaving sometime soon perhaps as early as next week for its base in Norfolk, Virginia, the Comfort had only treated 179 total patients.
This means there was always plenty of space onboard for Cobble Hill Health Centers patients.
All of this matters because Cobble Hill Health Center has been linked to numerous coronavirus deaths, and all presumably because of how overwhelmed the nursing home has been.
Tuchman said some staff wore garbage bags for protection. Some worked 16-hour shifts. And at times, patients were dying so quickly that the centers refrigerated storage was beyond capacity, forcing workers to rotate bodies in and out as they waited for space at funeral homes or morgues, The Wall Street Journal has confirmed.
But instead of honoring the homes request, state health officials reportedly emailed so-called guidance on how to conserve supplies during a shortage, and a reminder to submit requests daily to New York Citys Office of Emergency Management.
In response to questions from the Journal, a New York State Department of Health defended the departments handling of the matter, saying it had acted quickly and aggressively to provide the home with guidance.
But the home never asked for guidance. It asked for a transfer of patients. It also reportedly asked for personal protective equipment.
Weve distributed PPE to Cobble Hill Health Center as part of our weekly routine PPE deliveries, the spokesperson reportedly added.
But according to Tuchman, this too is somewhat of a false claim: Mr. Tuchman said he got some PPE from the city, but not enough, the Journal reported.
Trump’s fault.
Deaths by democrats don’t matter.
What’s going on there with nursing homes defies reasonable explanation.
I suspect something sinister is afoot.
People don’t want to see their loved ones die needlessly and suffering alone due to the poor policies of tyrannical, power drunk politicians. Forcing nursing homes to accept COVID-19 patients when they did not have the trained personnel, appropriate facilities and equipment was criminal.
Nothing will happen to either idiot because Democrats and media.
Trump’s fault because Democrat and media.
There is a great debt which must be paid.
When, oh when, do Democrats start really worrying about their future and their very existence?
They were too busy blaming Trump to actually help the people that elected them.
I wonder if this nonsense being thrown at Trump is partly a cover for this and many untold other instances of incompetence and negligence by both Cuomo and DeBlasio that contributed to the high infection rates and death tolls in New York state and even just NYC alone.
What do you expect from the culture of death. The elderly are a finically liability.
Arrest them for manslaughter.
Cuomo and de Blasio were overwhelmed, not the hospitals, due to misspending tax payer money, once again, and being unprepared for an emergency.
“face scrutiny”? Where? By whom? I haven’t seen a word about it other than a few conservative sites. I’m guessing the extent of any “scrutiny” will be a “stern letter” placed in their file and that’s about it.
Being a Democrat means nothing is ever your fault.
Both of these hacks get re-elected. Guaranteed.
No, I can tell you that it’s weak immune systems. Plus, refusal to give HCQ cocktails early or ever.
Those families effected should lawyer up and go after these scumbags. If there is compensation sadly it comes out of tax payers money and it should be noted, we dont want the money we want your job! STEP DOWN and the they all should file a civil wrongful death suit against them. They need to pay!
I half agree with you. Yes, they wanted to damage Trump. You are assuming the decisions were made from incompetence and negligence.
The decisions were made knowingly and with malice. Just as they knew what would happen when they released violent criminals, they knew putting contagious people with at risk populations would increase the death rate.
You still assume democrats are just incompetent, because it's unthinkable to many people that elected officials would kill people for political gain.
Once the election system has been sufficiently compromised to ensure someone cannot be voted out of office, they enact their true agenda. The starvation of the people of Venezuela wasn't an unintended consequence of socialism. It was the intended outcome.
How many Matildas died because Andrew Cuomo sent infected sick seniors back to facilities unable to care for them properly and protect residents from their contagion ?
I believe it was intentional....It's how Democrats think....the elderly are a big tax on the system and need to just "GO AWAY"....remenber Zeke Emanual...when one hit's 75 they should...remove themselves!!!
