Americans could start to see shortages of pork, chicken and beef on grocery shelves as soon as May as major packing plants swept by the coronavirus remain shuttered and the nations massive stockpiles of frozen meat begin to dwindle.
Any empty shelves to date have been the result of bumps in the supply chain, with stores being unable to restock as quickly as customers are buying. But bacon, pork chops and ham could be the first to face actual shortages: The amount of frozen pork in storage nationwide more than 621 million pounds dropped 4 percent from March to April, the USDA reported this week. Slaughter rates are down 25 percent, and 400,000 animals are backed up in slaughterhouses.

We’re going to forced away from having meat in our diets with more carbs. Not good.
The shortages are going to start sooner if they keep advertising it.
People are going to start panic buying again.
Just ordered 1/2 beef and 1/2 hog, thankfully I am in a rural enough area that this is possible.
Might want to do that sooner rather than later.
We made a trip to SAMS this week and the meat counter was basically empty. Hubby said he could have put everything that was out (other than the fake meat stuff) in one buggy.
exactly... saw this coming awhile back.
Here we go,
Toilet paper all over again.
Now everyone runs out and stocks up on meat and guess what, the store shelves really do go empty then.
People are the cattle.
yup
Just think how PETA is celebrating along with the Climate Change proponents. Less methane.
Buying 5 cows and two spotted hogs. The racoons get my chickens every time.
It’s not too late to panic!
Get in early on this one. If you felt left out of the TP crisis, you can be on the leading edge this time!
There's 320 million Americans. Why is this not at least 6.4 billion pounds?
“The shortages are going to start sooner if they keep advertising it.
People are going to start panic buying again.”
The hammer has hit the nail squarely on the head. The media would like nothing more than to see the public panic again. Makes for good news.
Yeah I heard a trucker the other night (700 am out of Cinn OH) saying there would be meat shortages and that he went to get bacon and it had already gone up to nine dollars.
Personally, I worry about inflation hitting. Toilet paper might go up to fifty dollars! Seriously, just plain old supplies (OTC drugs, cleaning, batteries, wax paper, alum foil). What if anti acid went up to thirty dollars a bottle? My SSA check won’t go very far; and gov’t won’t give any increase for long while.
I bought a lb. today and will stick it in the freezer. Tomorrow I will do the same. Just don’t want to deprive someone else. One at a time seems right.
We live in ranching country, we can buy it on the hoof and butcher it if need be.
I have already suggested sending someone with a trailer to Iowa or wherever to buy finished pigs and doing the same, it is legal to cut up your own meat still.
Please don’t make this come to a decision between bacon and Coronavirus...
The freezer warehouses are full of meat - several cold storage facilities are out of room and are trying to fill up the grocery stores.
Another panic story from someone who is not connected with the Industry.
