Do you feel the need for speed? If so, here are some cartridges that deliver the fastest bullet velocity currently available in a centerfire rifle cartridge.
There has always been a certain obsession among hunters and shooters with achieving the fastest bullet velocity possible. This is especially important among varmint and predator hunters.
After all, an extremely high velocity load will generally have a flatter trajectory and more resistance to wind drift than a similar load at a slower velocity.
Increasing the speed of a bullet will offer a bit more room for error when estimating the range or wind, both of which are ideal for shooting a small target at long range in a rapidly developing situation. At the same time, really high velocity bullets can produce very impressive results when they hit something.
The good news is that many of the major gun and ammunition manufacturers have devoted considerable time and effort into developing a number of cartridges that are ideal for predator and varmint hunters and offer the highest velocity possible. In many cases, these cartridges deliver very fast bullet velocities along with outstanding accuracy.

If you are going for velocity you want saboted rounds.
A high BC bullet such as the 6.5 Creedmore remains supersonic out past 500 yds.
Remember those Accelerator rounds from 25 years or so ago? A 30-06 moved well over 3,500 fps or so if I remember right. I forget who made them.

I have a .17 Remington and love it. I use it for coyotes who creep up and threaten our chickens.
I knew a gunsmith who wildcatted a .22-06. He said the muzzle velocity was like 5,000 FPS IIRC.
I love my 22-250s. One is a Rem 700 with 12x redfield; the other my dad’s 788 circa 1975 with an old 12x weaver long scope and draws commentary at the range given its wooden stock and condition. The 700, circa 2018, is more accurate. Use primarily the hornady 55gr loads.
Remington. There were also guys using the bullet/sabot combination in hot 7.62x25 rounds out of CZ 52’s at 1800 fps...

I remember those. Made by Remington and surprisingly shot to about the same point as their 150 grain bullets at normal ranges.
I thought they were a great idea but didn’t catch on. I think I still have a few somewhere.

Remington 30-06 Accelerator cartridge was a 65 grain bullet, half lead / half nylon plastic. Cruel for the usual deer hunting, but fantastic for woodchucks. It lifted them right out of the burrow with an upper torso or head shot.
Over the years, I have heard from others that the 788 is supposed to have a very fast lock speed. I would like to know what that means.
Remington. Fast at the expense of accuracy.
I know a USDA Predator Hunter who is loaned out to State Ag and Wildlife Departments who have a tough predator situation that their resources can’t handle. The 22-250 is his go-to cartridge for 80% of his work.
