The Supreme Court could soon overturn the temporary protections for people who came to the country illegally as children.
President Donald Trump will consider protecting Dreamers who came to the country illegally as children as part of a larger immigration deal later this year, thrusting the contentious issue into the heart of election season, according to five people familiar with the situation.
Trump told Republican senators at the White House Thursday that he will punt on a proposal until after an upcoming Supreme Court ruling that could overturn the temporary protections for Dreamers the Obama administration implemented, known as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
During a White House meeting on Thursday, Trump told Republican senators that he wants to get something done to address "the underlying problem," but only after the ruling, said Sen. Lindsey Graham, chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a close Trump ally who attended the gathering.
"The take away for me is if the court rules in the president's favor, we're not going to allow these folks to have their lives turned upside down, but we will try to put together a package that protects the DACA population," Graham said, adding the package will also address "how the system is so broken."
Trump has tried for years to use protections for Dreamers to try to strike an immigration deal with Democrats in exchange for his more hardline immigration priorities but all his attempts have failed.
Several other Republicans attended the meeting, including Sens. Mike Lee of Utah, Ted Cruz of Texas, Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Tom Cotton of Arkansas, Martha McSally of Arizona, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, Sen. Josh Hawley of Missouri and David Perdue of Georgia.

Yes, that’s what i meant..but i did a poor job of saying it.
Lets get it real, America!
This should be part of a Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement bill, missing since 1986 ONE TIME amnesty. The List of Comprehensive Immigration Enforcement, missing since 1986 goes like this -
1) southern barrier;
2) require eVerify to hire;
3) end all chain migration;
4) birthright per Minor v. Happersett (plural parents);
5) end work visas;
6) 10-year moratorium on all new applications for citizenship (40 years to allow workplace automation effects on downsizing population);
7) Set up an illegal aliens victim restitution fund.
Enactment of these provisions will motivate illegal aliens to SELF-deport, and remove colonizadors from our welfare rolls.
It is not that Trump voters will vote for a democrat; it is that an immigration betrayal will dampen enthusiasm and they will not vote at all. Trump will be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
He already tried this a couple of years ago. Why is he doing this during the Election? People will stay home.
“Show us where Trump has ever told the people who elected him (not all of whom are conservatives) that he is even considering deporting the dreamers who do not have felony or extensive misdemeanor convictions.”
I know - he NEVER said that he was going to deport everyone, and he ALWAYS said that he had a ‘soft spot’ for Dreamers. What he did stand for has getting our immigration system under control, so we controlled who entered and who was here - and that everyone here should be here LEGALLY in one way or another.
People on our side still voted for him because he was FAR BETTER than any other option, in either party...so we basically ignored his talk regarding Dreamers.
“It is not that Trump voters will vote for a democrat; it is that an immigration betrayal will dampen enthusiasm and they will not vote at all. Trump will be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”
I agree...what the hell is the point. He could at least wait until AFTER the election.
“Thats not what he says here, they all have to go home.”
Not quite, but close enough - he does say they have to leave and then re-enter legally. Also, E-Verify seems to have left his vocabulary.
He doesn’t talk about ‘the children’, as in DACA. So, still, where has he said they’re going home?
“There is ZERO reason to offer some kind of concession.”
The broad reason, would be to get immigration laws permanently changed, to be based on merit, rather than family reunification.
If immigration was based on a pure merit basis (that is, how good they will be for this Country), then many “Dreamers” would objectively be good candidates.
If a dreamer has fluent English, a good education, no criminal record and is a healthy young adult; they would be a good candidate under merit-based immigration. Additional quality screens might be used, like higher income, assets, or qualifications for certain shortage skills.
Although many Freepers would argue for a sweeping total deportation of all dreamers, based on moral grounds or for deterrence, the objective economic business case would be to keep the ones that make money, and get rid of the those that will cost money.
Another consideration is the political issue. It might be possible to split or depress Democrat voters, if President Trump is offering to save the Dreamers (who pass the quality cuts), but the Dems are forced to play the bad guys, denying them their dreams, because they refuse to deal.
In fact, the President may already know that it is politically impossible for the Democrats to make a comprehensive deal like the one he would propose, and this is all just posturing, to make the Dems take the blame, when dreamers are deported. “I offered to save them, buck Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi just refused...”
We got amnesty and no wall under Reagan. Record numbers in caravans and Syrian rapefugees under Trump.
