If You're Thinking of Living In / Howard Beach, Queens; An Urban Enclave With Prow to the Sea
The New York Times ^ | 1998 | Joyce Cohen

CITY? Suburb? Seaside? Howard Beach has something of each.

Though it's part of Queens, this neighborhood has a suburban seclusion, hemmed in as it is by the John F. Kennedy International Airport and the marshlands of Jamaica Bay.

Driveways hold motorboats as well as cars, and anchors occasionally turn up as lawn ornaments. In many ways, Howard Beach is a coastal community, with a fair amount of waterfront and waterview property along with some of the most elaborate homes in South Queens.

''Howard Beach is positioned phenomenally within the boroughs,'' said Art Beroff, an investment banker who is a member of Community Board 10. ''It has a lot of the attributes people have reached out to Long Island for. We offer people housing variations depending on their pocketbook and their stage of life.''

Fine location.

It’s a good neighborhood. I lived a few miles west of there.

I knew this had to be an old article just by the prices of houses they quoted.

I grew up on the old side of Howard Beach. We had a great waterfront house with a big dock for our boats. Our lives did revolve around fishing, water skiing, ice skating in the winter.

Noisy as hell but you get used to the sound of the subway and the airplanes.

A somewhat politically conservative haven to escape to. American flags fly all along the narrow streets and avenues.

Yeah, no thanks.

It’s still New York City, with the highest combined state/local income taxes in the country.

Plus. Governor “Fredo’s Brother” said conservatives like me are not welcome.

As long as you don't mind airplanes flying treetop high in and out of JFK over your head, it's great.

Then the gentrifiers will moan about all the noise and sue somebody and lose. :)

Actually, if you went a bit farther south of Howard Beach, through Broad Channel towards the ocean, you’d land up at the real Queens coastal/seaside community of Rockaway Beach where a boatload of illegal Chinese once tried to land. They opted for the one unlit section of the peninsula and landed smack-dab in the middle Gateway National Recreation Area where they were immediately picked up by the Coast Guard.

*I was there watching the rescue before the news crews arrived.

There was an old elementary school on City Isl that closed around 1960. It was used as the police station on some episodes of Car 54 Where are You
