So one of my favorite times of the year is getting an extra hour of sleep due to giving back the extra hour of daylight that we got back in April.
I'm a big proponent of Daylight Savings Time. Having that extra hour of daylight during warmer months is so important, especially for working people, who really benefit from the longer day.
I don't think I can convey in words how much I love Daylight Savings time and changing the clocks twice a year. It would be a much sadder world if we did not have a way to bring in extra daylight during the summer months.
From about mid May to mid September, I get home from work with ample daylight left and I get to putting a steak on the grill and having a beer or two while sitting on my patio, waiting for the fireflies to come out.
Thank you to Daylight Savings time for making that possible.
But now it's time to give that extra daylight back. Which is okay by me because it's getting too cold to sit out on that patio anyhow.
Starting Monday, I come home to total darkness as our days are now shorter but that's okay. I will be hanging up some Christmas lights (inside) this weekend and that will brighten my mood considerably. I always do Christmas lights floor to ceiling in the house and have them on through Super Bowl Sunday.
So I actually like the shorter days during the winter months. When it is dark and cold outside, you just want to crank up the fireplace, sit in a comfortable chair and spend a few hours reading a good book.
Also tonight, I get that extra hour of sleep as the day is 25 hours long. I wonder what I am going to dream about!
Two of my favorites days of the year is when the clocks change. In April, we make the day longer and in early November, we make the day shorter. All in balance.
Also, the angle of the sun is much lower this time of year so the sunlight comes through the windows most of the day (my condo faces the South). So even though it's colder outside, there is warmth on the inside. And when the sun goes down, the Christmas lights come on. So I can deal.
I have to give special thanks to Benjamin Franklin for coming up with a way to extend the daylight during the warmer months of the year.
Then in April, we get that glorious extra hour of daylight and suddenly I'm coming home and sitting on my patio with a grilled steak and beers on ice, with plenty of daylight left.
They just put that hour on the other end of the day - sort of like cutting 12 inches off one end of a blanket and sewing it on the other making it a longer blanket.
I used to like Daylight Saving Time. Now it does not matter. I’m on Retirement Saving Time. My time is totally mine. I have no where to be if I don’t want to. I’ll enjoy this for as long as it lasts.
One of the lies they’ve used to sell it. First they blamed farmers, then energy. When Indiana switch to all DST from their random county silliness they got a chance to compare. No savings in energy. Really it’s just the government reminding you who’s in charge. Change your clock twice a year cause we said so.
That's actually a good idea as it's starting to get cold. I could use an extra foot on my blanket.
Actually you don’t even have to wait until we are back on DST for the sunset to be as late as it is now. In Northern California the sunset on March 8 of this year, when we were on standard time [one or two days before the change], was the same as it is today, November 2, on DST: 6:10 p.m.
The sunrise on March 8 was almost an hour earlier, 6:35, compared to 7:33 this morning.
The actual length of the day of course goes from sunrise to sunset, and will be the same time as it is now on about February 1.
No it doesn’t. You get the exact same amount of daylight, just different numbers on your clock for various positions of the sun.
I still grill steaks in winter when its cold and snowing outside.
That's actually one of my main points. Daylight Savings Time is for the WORKING people. So Joe Six-pack can come home during the warm months after a hard day's work and have that extra hour on his deck to grill a steak and have a couple of beers.
Not true. I definitely get an extra hour of daylight during DST.
Nice photo but I think your dog is dead.
So do I. But I used the cast iron method. I sear it on the stovetop and then put the cast iron into the oven until it reaches perfect temperature for medium rare. Then while steak is resting, I toss onions, garlic and mushrooms into the hot skillet. So good!
It’s the government’s answer on how to stretch the economy.
“No the days have been getting shorter since June 22, and will begin to get longer on December 22.”
This.
Thanks to the taxidermist, she will always live!
I told the dog already but I think he’s gonna want out early as always.
Apparently dogs don’t care about daylight savings time.
Also incorrect.
The days will continue to get shorter until the Winter Equinox which is Saturday, December 21st. After that, our days start getting longer again.
It doesn't seem like it, but they do.
Stay on standard time 365 or split the difference to the half hour all year. Just STOP the change.
Leave it to the government to think that they are powerful enough to give everyone extra daylight and the idiots who actually believe it!
Noon was actually defined, once upon a time, and had a meaning. Daylight Savings time was created by government to save energy, which in today’s world it does not, it costs energy. There are also real costs to switching clocks and schedules twice a year.
The seasons have a natural flow with noon meaning, within certain timezone bounds, that the sun is about due south on the meridian each day. Rather than forcing unnecessary costs on everyone else, if you don’t like the flow to the seasons where you live - change your latitude and move closer to the equator.
Standard Time is logical and has a meaning. Daylight saving time is just a mess.
I hate DST.
It screws with the point of time.
It ignores the astronomical basis.
It takes away an hour of morning light.
It messes up time based systems whose clocks are hard to change.
It forces the will of some on others.
It disrupts those who dont understand (children, animals).
It wastes time just updating clocks.
It annoys developers who have to code software to address it.
If you want to change your schedule, go ahead.
Leave my clock alone.
