I've managed to live without Facebook and Twitter.
However, we're in a rural area and apparently Facebook Marketplace is the place to go for local classifieds for buying/selling and for offering/finding services. I need someone to haul some scrap metal off our property and have hit a brick wall trying to find someone through my small network of contacts (I'm at a new job at month 4).
So I'm reluctantly considering opening a Facebook account, if only because the site's popups make it virtually unusable without one. I've also noticed a lot of local businesses don't have web sites in lieu of a Facebook page. I don't get it, but whatever.
Any advice on signing up and configuring the account to maximize my privacy and minimize annoyances?
Already been down that road. There are no junkyards in the entire county. Nearest scrap dealer is two counties over and won’t accept cars. I need someone to haul a car away from property we own. They’re going to have to take it apart or cut it apart in order to scrap whatever they can’t sell in parts.
If we were still in the city, I’d have half a dozen places I could call and they’d take it for free if not pay me for the scrap value. As it is, I’m probably going to have to pay someone once I find them. We also have personal property taxes on vehicles, so I need to make sure the paperwork is taken care of properly.
I’ve been working on this little project for months and gotten nowhere. I’m out of leads.
When, and it probably is when not "if" hackers get your information you don't want them to be able to steal your identity. Heck, you don't want fb and it's partners using it either.
I have a fb account I use only to keep up with a neighborhood page/group and keep in touch with a couple of friends miles away. I follow several other pages/users like Colion Noir and the NRA just to cheeses off fb.
That pretty girl who wants to be your friend is not real.
Nobody around here uses craiglist. I don’t know why. I guess it’s a city vs country thing.
When we lived in the city, everyone used Craigslist. Out in the country, everyone uses Marketplace.
I don’t get it, but that’s the way it is. Maybe it’s because Craigslist is oriented by metropolitan area and the nearest two are an hour each away in two opposite directions.
I might suggest “Pierre Delecto” as a user name.
You’ll instantly draw thousands of followers.
You may even be nominated as a Republican presidential nominee in 2020...
Dont use your real name. And Never EVER post any pictures of anyone you care about, including yourself . Do not list any personally identifying information (birthdays, anniversaries, gradations, schools etc.). Youre only there to make initial contact. Move discussions et al, off FB.
Sourpuss Mittens will file a complaint with Facebook that Pierre Delecto is not ‘your real name’.
Just tell them you’re computer illiterate. In my case it’s not a lie.

Dont do it. Its like locusts. The swarm of incoming crapola is astounding.
As mentioned previously, call the scrapyatd and ask for a name.
If you gave wnough sruff, they might even pay you for it.
I’d throw the stuff in the trash or put it at curb with free sign before signing up for facebook.
Post an ad at your local laundry mat, grocery store etc. Craigslist.org as mentioned - they have a section to advert Free stuff.
Scrap isn’t paying squat right now so if you don’t have much, people aren’t going to travel very far to come get it.
Around here, cars are paying $80 per ton. That gets you $160 for a full size 4x4 pickup truck. Misc steel aka tin is probably down to $10-20 per ton

I changed my birthday and some spelling. Its funny when my birthday shows up on my Facebook my friends are confused because its months off my real birthday.
Scrap prices are in the sub-basement and still falling. You’ll most likely find someone on Marketplace depending on what the scrap is. Personally I’m not picking up cars due to current prices.
I have one cleanup I’m continuing simply because I gave my word. After that I won’t take scrap until prices rise which may not happen until well into 2020.

Advice on opening a Facebook account..............DON’T.................
If you don’t want the content of your computers, phones, and tablets copied and preserved by their datamining then only access your account from computers at your local library. Also, never, ever, upload anything.
My advice is don’t.
My FB doesn’t have pop-ups
