Yankees Spent $2 Billion and Have No World Titles in 2010s To Show For It
The Wall Street Journal ^ | October 20, 2019 | Brian Costa and Jared Diamond

In many respects, the New York Yankees just completed an extraordinary decade. Over the past 10 regular seasons, they won 921 games, more than any other team in baseball. They made the playoffs seven times—no other team played into October more often.

The 2010s were a success by every measure—that is, except for the only one their fans actually care about: winning the World Series.

New York’s season-ending defeat to the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series on Saturday means that for the first time since the 1910s, they have gone a full calendar decade without so much as appearing in the World Series.

Chapman should’ve thrown Altuve triple digit heat instead of 84 mph hangers.

No, they went to the World Series in 1981, but lost.

As bad as that demolition was , 10 runs in the first inning , no doubt those back to back homeruns in the eighth by the nationals against Kershaw to end the Dodgers was even worse for them!

I know. But the article was referencing winning a WS, not merely participating in one.

Keep on crying about New York.

Plus, your Radio Play By Play guy is a friend - used to do our radio coverage for the local AA team. Robert Ford. Terrific behind the mic and in front of it as well!

I paid over $500 for two seats, not including parking and extras.

My only saving grace of the night - I won the silent auction and got Mike Foltynewicz and Sean Newcomb autographed baseball. Oh wait. No accident this time. I went to the Braves vs. the Dodgers and got rear-end by an SUV.

As bad as that demolition was , 10 runs in the first inning , no doubt those back to back homeruns in the eighth by the nationals against Kershaw to end the Dodgers was even worse for them!

Agree, Stanton shouldn’t have been on the roster. And you can bet if the Yanks still didn’t still owe him around a quarter bil, he wouldn’t have been. Worst high dollar acquisition ever. Worse than Ellsbury.

I recall Willie Mays largest salary was $125,000. With $2 billion, you could hire Willie Mays for 16,000 years.

The only play by play I heard was Joe Buck and and bunch of friends were booing from their seats at their homes about how biased he was. I’ll have to listen to one of the games on the radio during the World Series. That would bring back some good memories.....used to be, that’s all we had....;) Thanks Shady........;)

You’re right about that. I would hope any fans that acted badly would be sent home. No reason for that kind of behavior. Matter of fact I felt soooooo sorry for Chapman last night. That has to be a very long walk back to the club house......and was it just me or did he appear to be smiling? Maybe that’s just his expression but anyhow, I still felt sorry for him.....

Really, as one that grew up in a baseball family, with all the money the Yankees have spent they forgot one thing. Pitching wins baseball games, not hitting.

It’s really that simple. If they had Gerrit Cole and Max Scherzer, they would have won 120 games and the WS.

No, this has always been my theory and once again it worked. pick a team that has two killer pitchers, period.

In the regular season you need a five man rotation, in playoffs you only need two that nobody can beat, you don’t even need another pitcher to win a game.

This will be a great WS, with some of the best pitchers you’ll ever see in one series. Astros with Cole, Verlander, and an extra Greinke 21 20 18 wins with a combined win percentage approaching 80%. Astros will win the WS, IMO. With Scherzer and Strasbourg on the other team, anything could happen however.

Also, the Detroit Tigers in the 2010s. They had Verlander, Scherzer, David Price, Rick Porcello, and Anibal Sanchez as a starting five and couldn’t get it done in the playoffs. 3 of those guys are in this year’s World Series...the other two won it last year.

Joe Buck was only valuable servicing men on Times Square. A shame Ratso died as they got to Miami.

“Why was Stanton on the roster if they weren’t going to use him? They could hve given that roster spot to a lefthanded hitter like Tauchman, Ford, or Wade, who could have played and helped them.”

Exactly. All of their big name hitters looked like chumps. Stanton never looked comfortable at the plate even when they played the Brewers. Encarnation did NOTHING in the playoffs and when they needed homers from Judge they got singles. All the big names turn into Arod in October. Tauch, Ford and the other fill-ins hit all the time. They earned their place in the playoffs. And don’t get me started on the relief pitchers. They fawned all over Kahnle, Britton and Ottovino. When the time came they all sucked. Each of them would throw 3 balls before a strike. I also never liked Chapman as closer. Another bum who routinely goes deep in the count before getting anyone out. I especially liked the way he stood SMILING on the mound after giving up the walk off HR to Altuve. Fine him $100,000 for that. OK rant off.
