Semiautomatic rifles have their place. In the proper hands, with quality ammo and parts, they can shoot a lot of rounds a long way. There is also a place for bolt guns, but the relatively slow rate of fire demands that they be employed with some stand-off. At distance, even a Lee-Enfield or Mosin-Nagant could be effective.
My vote for home protection? The all-American choice is the Remington 870. The pump shotgun is incredibly simple. The controls? A safety button and a pump. Work the pump and shoot. Got a jam? Work the pump and shoot. Repeat as necessary and reload.
It is funny the way people take to a certain gun. My God-father used the Remington 870 in Vietnam. He told me to buy one. The 870 always felt right to me. I am not knocking the Mossberg or other pumps, but I like the 870. If my God-father had been issued a Mossberg, I would probably have one.
The 870 has great ergonomics and a Magpul stock makes them even better. The shotgun itself has a modern, modular design with many aftermarket upgrades available. I recommend a flashlight and Tritium sights for home-defense use. Read the rest of home defense shotgun.
Nice. Do you have one?
Ill stick with my Browniing A5s......
Yep, I think you’re right. Keep it simple.
I definitely want one!
Good grief. That is even farther out of reach dollareise than it use to be. I will settle for my 870 and other tools.
Don’t forget a CONGRESS of baboons. [Yes, I know, that’s an email myth, but I like it...]
Yes, I feel like Granny Clampett when I use that gun. :-) The only problem I have is my husband keeps locking it up in the safe. He says it’s too valuable to leave around. In the case it’s not out where I can grab it I have my grandpa’s old Mossberg 12ga. and my .38 special next to the bed.
That’s a special model with wood furniture so it looks like a WWI trench gun. Also, street price on that model (like any other) would be less than MSRP, as the distributor/wholesale prices run to the mid $600s on those. A comparable 590A1 without wood and heat shield would be about $150 less than that. So keep saving those pennies!
It Has a Bayonet Lug!
Sweet.
:)
Can you get a 30-round drum for that pump gun?
That’s how I feel about my Benelli M3 Super 90. I have an 870 and love it to but it’s no Benelli. I even had the 870 completely gone through and upgraded by Scattergun Technologies. They’re both nice tools. I’m surprised no one has mentioned it but I like shotguns for home defense simply due to the fact they are less likely to punch through multiple walls and take out a neighbor.
EXCELLENT point!
Gold star awarded!
Try this:
Guess it makes 4 controls, f you count the trigger.
Winchester 1300 is nearly impossible to short-stroke.
Duck hunters have an edge in operating a pump under pressure,I’d say. The ergonomics be On my way! Second nature.
To a pitbull, too. Better to drop to a knee and scratch it behind the ear.
