Home Defense or SHTF - Get your Shotgun
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 8/27/2019 | S Miller

Semiautomatic rifles have their place. In the proper hands, with quality ammo and parts, they can shoot a lot of rounds a long way. There is also a place for bolt guns, but the relatively slow rate of fire demands that they be employed with some stand-off. At distance, even a Lee-Enfield or Mosin-Nagant could be effective.

My vote for home protection? The all-American choice is the Remington 870. The pump shotgun is incredibly simple. The controls? A safety button and a pump. Work the pump and shoot. Got a jam? Work the pump and shoot. Repeat as necessary and reload.

It is funny the way people take to a certain gun. My God-father used the Remington 870 in Vietnam. He told me to buy one. The 870 always felt right to me. I am not knocking the Mossberg or other pumps, but I like the 870. If my God-father had been issued a Mossberg, I would probably have one.
The 870 has great ergonomics and a Magpul stock makes them even better. The shotgun itself has a modern, modular design with many aftermarket upgrades available. I recommend a flashlight and Tritium sights for home-defense use. Read the rest of home defense shotgun.

Last time I checked, the 870 had three controls. I understand the writer’s point is to make it sound simple. But how does he chamber that first round?

The best part... Everyone speaks 12ga pump. I don’t care who you are, you know that sound.

KSGs are assembled with screws rather than pins that will try to walk out of their holes somewhere in the triple digit round count. The selector switch is wonky and after the guns start getting warm, you start seeing feeding issues. I think they contort slightly after getting hot. They’ve been known to be less than reliable for a while now

The rattle of a pump gun is like the rattle of a rattlesnake.

“Comparing the ergonomics of the two with a pistol grip,“

We don’t care for pistol grips on shotguns. Some do, I know and God bless them.

Best,

‘I always thought the pumps on mossbergs rattled too much. ‘

Mossberg claims that is an an intentional feature. They say it increases its tolerance to stress and abuse in the field - ie. I won’t break as easy. Don’t know if I buy this explanation but that’s what they claim. The military buys it though - “If it don’t rattle it don’t go into battle.”

I like semi autos but they have problems just as pump actions or over unders do.

The old A5 humpback was a good design, I have a saiga 12 that I like, but the gas system is odd and needs regular loving.

I have an Ithica pump that is finicky feeding/ejecting shells and recoils like a mule.

Gave my buddy a Turkish O/U for a favor, it patterned great, but one day I did not have the selector fully engaged and it let both barrels go at the same time... Surprise!

Not all of them. Neither of my 870s rattle at all

We trained extensively with the 570 which sort of made a believer outta me. I hunt with a 870.

I like weapons set up out-of-the-box ready. Mostly because I’ve too many otherwise nominal OTS tactical’s smudged up with the latest and greatest applied on a desirous whim.

Simple works.

LOL, that’s right. Fortunately what I know about bears is that they don’t get along good enough to hunt together. Our main problem locally are meth heads and illegals. They can only come through my door one at a time. :-)

Thanks. Had it for a long time. There is not much scarier than the click of a DB being flipped, locked, and ready to fire.

I’ve other tools but I’m most comfortable with the .410 shotgun. I’m only two inches more than 4’10” myself, and my hands are child size.

Another thing I like about shotguns. The closer your target gets, the more your target gets. So targets tend to avoid getting close, and you don’t need to be a marksman. As long as you can see trouble coming, trouble sees trouble too.

However, it isn’t good for all occasions. If there’s a pit bull out there somewhere with your name on it, you can’t jog with a shotgun.

Had the chance to buy a custom A5 years ago for $750, custom hand made Turkish walnut burled stocks, custom Italian engraving.

I thought its such an ugly gun design..

Lord I should have bought that.

My son has a Benelli M4. He’s happy with that. I never had a shotgun so I wouldn’t know what to buy. Something in the 500 range, so if anyone has suggestions, please let me know.

Plus I differ with him on just pump again to clear a jamb.

If you short stroke an 870 and the shell jams, the pump action locks up solid tight. No way you can pump the problem away.

The only way to clear it is to remove the end of the tube, the spring, etc., and dump it all on the round and start over.

Anyone who needs advice on what gun to buy is likely to short stroke when under stress.

Other brands may differ in that regard. My experience is only with the 870.
