Home Defense or SHTF - Get your Shotgun
Am Shooting Journal ^ | 8/27/2019 | S Miller

Semiautomatic rifles have their place. In the proper hands, with quality ammo and parts, they can shoot a lot of rounds a long way. There is also a place for bolt guns, but the relatively slow rate of fire demands that they be employed with some stand-off. At distance, even a Lee-Enfield or Mosin-Nagant could be effective.

My vote for home protection? The all-American choice is the Remington 870. The pump shotgun is incredibly simple. The controls? A safety button and a pump. Work the pump and shoot. Got a jam? Work the pump and shoot. Repeat as necessary and reload.

It is funny the way people take to a certain gun. My God-father used the Remington 870 in Vietnam. He told me to buy one. The 870 always felt right to me. I am not knocking the Mossberg or other pumps, but I like the 870. If my God-father had been issued a Mossberg, I would probably have one.
The 870 has great ergonomics and a Magpul stock makes them even better. The shotgun itself has a modern, modular design with many aftermarket upgrades available. I recommend a flashlight and Tritium sights for home-defense use. Read the rest of home defense shotgun.

“I guess that guide would be out of luck if he were attacked by a herd of bears.”

Not trying to be picking nits with you, just informational...

A ‘group’ of bears is called a ‘sleuth.’

A pod of whales, a murder of crows, a insanity of reporters and a sleuth of bears...

What the guide didn’t tell you is that the shotgun was not for shooting the bears ...

“Hey, why are you putting on your sneakers? There’s a bear coming. And that shotgun, what are you doing with ...”

...you can’t jog with a shotgun.

Sure you can. Probably not recommended in many areas...

Where exactly IS it recommended to jog with a shotgun? :)

And don’t tell me bear country! A fast pace in the woods is a signal to some predators.

Saiga 12 with a 20 rd drum is a hoot, it will walk you back 5 feet.

the gas system sucks, but I figured it out.

"...The AK comes in two main calibers: 7.62×39mm and 5.45×39mm...."

7.62×39mm and 5.45×39mm aren't "calibers," they're "cartridges."

...Because of its caliber, the 12 gauge shotgun....

And 12 gauge is a gauge, not a caliber.

The best thing about writing for American Shooting Urinal is that there's absolutely no pressure because no matter how bad a day you're having at the keyboard, no matter how crappily you write, you can't possibly diminish their prestige (because they're already as bad as it gets).

I have a penchant for all things AK, I have all calibers and gauges.

Kalashnikov was a genius

The rise and fall of the Kalishnakov is the stamped steel receiver, it flexes.

I love our Mossberg 500 tactical. Tang safety, ventilated forward rib, night sight ghost rings and hand camoed for our area.

Ah, the ol’ side-by-side Granny gun. That one looks in nice shape. A nice wall-hanger when it’s not being put to use. I got an H&R home defense pump with 16” barrel in 12 ga, and me being me, I had to kit it out with a tactical stock and grip with shell holder, rear rail, holo reflex sight/laser, and low light forward barrel sight. I’m known for a little bling overkill, except for the .22 cowboy shooters we have, and even then I ordered custom tooled leather for mine.

What is the collective FReeper opinion, dislikes, drawbacks, etc. to the Kel-Tec KSG?

Ugly as sin. Must be kept hidden when family and guests are over, so as not to horrify them.
