Pocket Knife Saves Man in Grizzly Bear Attack

'Colin Dowler ended up in a Life-or-Death Struggle with a Grizzly Bear in British Columbia'
A Canadian man from Dowler, British Columbia survived a brutal grizzly bear attack by stabbing the animal in the neck with a 2-inch pocket knife, according to reports.

Colin Dowler, 45, was mountain biking in the remote back country of British Columbia outside of the city of Power River on July 29 when he spotted a large male grizzly.

Dowler stopped about 100 feet away from the bear in order to decide what he should do next—stay still, ride past the bear, or cycle in the opposite direction. Dowler stated, "he wasn't really sure what to do about the situation," "I largely stood there, and let the grizzly keep walking up towards me."

As the bear approached him, Dowler—now becoming more nervous—tried to stay as still as possible so as not to provoke the bear. When the bear was too close for comfort, Dowler tried to nudge him away with a hiking pole, BBC reported. A brief tug-of-war ensued before Dowler threw his bike at the animal, the report said. Didn’t Rumsfeld say that you go to war with the weapons you have? Or something to that effect.

fight or flight... the bear walked up to him. he must not be much of a mountain bike if he didn’t try to out ride the bear...

he threw the bike at the bear... this guy is a lucky man. the two inch knife probably tickled the bear so much, the bear felt sorry for this maroon.

I am a hiker and a mountain biker, but I never have my hiking poles with me on my mountain bike (like this guy did). Odd bit of information.

Bears are FAST!

I watched two Alaskan Brown bears (larger then Grizzlies) run 30 MPH UP a 50 degree slope.

I was, to say the least, impressed.

a Life-or-Death Struggle with a Grizzly Bear in British Columbia'...

Oddly enough, this would not have worked out as well for him in London, where he'd be arrested, thrown in the slammer, keys thrown away, for knife possession well before he could have at it with the Grizzly.

You’re not going to ride a mountain bike away from a grizzly at 30+ mph. Unless you ride it off a cliff.

Thank goodness for the American Shooting journal! The rest of the MSM reported this as a “Grizzly suicide”.

That’s why it’s a good idea to take a friend. That way you don’t have to outrun the bear. You just have to outrun your friend:)

My point exactly.

He was riding and saw a grizzly so he decided to stop, get off the bike, and think about what to do? That seems an odd choice.

my rights as a freeper allow me to comment without reading...

just commenting on the little i read. compassion for the dead, he almost got some.

why personal attacks... you don’t know me... biking alone in bear country, one needs to show a little more common sense...

I once killed a bear with a pair of nail clippers, a pull tab, and a dollop of silly putty
