Coyote Hunting

The coyote is actually a small wolf. Its larger relative, the timber wolf, was what kept its numbers in check in the old days. The Louisiana red wolf is considered by some authorities to be a coyote and timber wolf cross. The coydog is a cross between a dog and a coyote, while the coywolf is a cross between the coyote and the wolf. These are bigger, stronger, and potentially more dangerous.

The elimination of its number one enemy, the timber wolf, and the network of roads and bridges man built enabled the coyote to quickly expand its range dramatically. Wolves will not tolerate the competition from coyotes and will quickly kill them. No wolves means more coyotes. Cougars will also kill coyotes and are a lot better neighbors than wolves. Encouraging the return of mountain lions would help matters at a far lower price than reintroducing wolves. I've lived around both, and while I enjoy having a mountain lion around, I will kill a wolf on sight.

Coyote attacks on humans are relatively rare with only two fatalities, three-year-old Kelly Kleen in Glendale, California, and 19-year-old Taylor Mitchell in Nova Scotia, Canada. They do pose a major threat to pets and livestock wherever they are found, and no prey-sized small children should be left alone outside in areas they inhabit, as they have been known to attack small children. As a result of these depredations, the coyote is often hunted, many times out of necessity instead of choice.

When hunting coyotes, the most common method is to call them in with a call or electronic recording. Coyote howls and rabbit calls are the most popular call sounds. The hunter should be sitting perfectly still and well camouflaged, just like a turkey hunter would be. Blinds are not necessary. Deer hunting tree stands work well if an electronic caller is placed on the ground. Locations along game trails will see coyote traffic, especially in the early morning and late evening. They are shooting the wrong coyotes. They need to go into Mexico and shoot real coyotes.

The sound of a rabbit in distress will draw any coyote or hawk around, and there are lots of them.

.243 with an 80 grain FMJ. Doesn’t mess up the pelt if you want to sell to a furrier.

If not .223 and .22-250 are popular.

If the Dali Lama can shoot hawks, I suppose it is ok to shoot coyotes.

A rabbit distress caller will draw in possums too.

Last week, one of our neighbors reported coyotes had killed one of their cats. This was 2 doors down. Her security cam caught 3 of them. It is now suspected their are 4 or 5 denning near the community swimming pool.

Till they are caught, I’m watching my dogs when I let them out.

Lovely, full bosomed huntress!
O yeah, about coyotes. I like the clever creatures but the must be killed. They are rampant where I live (South Carolina) and they love to eat our kittycats. A coyote took one of our cats out of our front yard while my daughter watched.

“”” treeing game is a close second “””

I went coon hunting a couple of times with my neighbor. Wondering through the woods and thorns up and down hills at night after sitting in a cold ass truck for an hour.

Na, I didn’t find it much fun. I guess the fun part is supposed to be seeing the god and coon fight but my neighbor did too good at shooting them and they didn’t move after hitting the ground. The only fight was my neighbor getting bit by his dog when he tried to get the coon away from him. Then the hides went down to a couple bucks a piece which didn’t even cover fuel and quiet 22 rounds.
