Sooo this is messed up.
The New York Times recently published a piece called Madonna at Sixty, written by Vanessa Grigoriadis. It explores her ever-changing public persona and such.
Its kind of the typical fluff piece youd imagine the New York Times would put out about a celebrity:
The night before the Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas in May, Madonna was sitting in the arena attached to the MGM Grand hotel, staring at a double of herself. The double, who was standing on the stage many yards away, was younger and looked Asian but wore a similar lace minidress and a wig in Madonnas current hairstyle, a 30s movie stars crimped blond waves. Its always the second person with the wig she wants to see it, a stage designer said, adding that when she makes a decision, she is definitive. Madonna wants 10 options, but when she says its the one, its the one.
Madonna was observing Madonna to make sure Madonna was doing everything perfectly. Up on the stage set of a funky urban street with lampposts and a tiled bar, the double hit her marks and held a fist up to her mouth like a faux microphone for a rendition of Medellín, the on-trend, Latin-inflected song that Madonna would be singing. Madonna looked at a TV and assessed the augmented-reality part of the show, in which four additional virtual Madonnas, one playing an accordion and another dressed like a bride, would materialize in the televised awards performance out of thin air. Nearby, guys bowed heads and said cryptic things like Wheres the digital key? and I need the alpha channel to one another, tensely.
All the fake Madonnas ran through the song a few times before Madonna skipped enthusiastically to the stage. The sex bomb at 60 was slightly less than bionic and wore a Swarovski-crystal-encrusted patch over her left eye (Its fashion, darling, an onlooker explained when I asked why she chose to wear it). Afterward, Madonna mused about something being off, and the next time she messed up the part where she stood on a table and gyrated her legs in and out in a move called the butterfly while popping her head in each direction. But by the third run-through she seemed ecstatic. Its so nice to see her smile, Megan Lawson, a choreographer, said from under a black bolero hat, and have it be a genuine smile.
Ok nothing all that important or even notable there, right?
WRONG.
Madonna has responded by saying she feels Raped.
Yup. You know nevermind the real victims of heinous sexual crimes. Madonna is just as much a victim as they are because someone wrote an article about her.
So why does she feel raped? Because the article mentioned her age and trivial and superficial matters which are further proof that the NYT is one of the founding fathers of the Patriarchy.
How AWFUL for her. Yup. Shes basically a rape victim. How dare anyone mention shes 60? SO TERRIBLE.
According to Daily Wire:
The singer issued her rebuke in an Instagram post on Thursday. Madame on the cover of N.Y.T. Magazine photographed by my dear friend @jr. Also sharing my fav photo that never made it in, along with pre-shoot chat and a celebratory glass of wine after many hours of work! she wrote in reference to an image she posted from the shoot for the profile.
She then pivoted to her blistering criticism of the patriarchal paper and what she said was its sexist coverage of her, despite the author being a woman. To say that I was disappointed in the article would be an understatement, she wrote (post edited for clarity). It seems you cant fix society and its endless need to diminish, disparage or degrade that which they know is good. Especially strong independent women.
The journalist who wrote this article spent days and hours and months with me and was invited into a world which many people dont get to see, but chose to focus on trivial and superficial matters such as the ethnicity of my stand-in or the fabric of my curtains and never ending comments about my age which would never have been mentioned had I been a MAN! she continued.
I disagree. The fact that shes had this long a music career is notable despite her gender.
The only difference? A man probably wouldnt have gotten so touchy about his age.
The performer then addressed the fact that the interviewer was a female. Women have a really hard time being the champions of other women even if they are posing as intellectual feminists, she said. Im sorry I spent 5 minutes with her.
Ok so then why call this the patriarchy? If a WOMAN wronged you doesnt that just prove everyone sucks equally?
She then dropped her raped reference: It makes me feel raped, she wrote. And yes Im allowed to use that analogy having been raped at the age of 19.
Actually, thats exactly the reason she should realize how messed up her reference is. But whatever.
Sorry you feel raped because people realize youre getting older, Madonna. It must be a tough life you live.
They don’t make movies like that anymore, thank god.
Her, raped? That’s a joke.
I felt that everytime I saw her voice and face.
She could pop the toaster down one day after the next, and one day finally get a piece of burnt toast, and she would blame the “patriarchy” for it.
You're not good.
... Especially strong independent women.
If this is your reaction to an article, you're not strong either.
“Madonna Feels Raped By the Patriarchy at the New York Times”
Was it good for you Madonna?
Maybe she shouldn’t have debuted herself writhing around on a stage in front of a large live audience (more on TV) singing “Like a Virgin”. Her image was set in stone after that, much to her enjoyment. She can claim whatever she wants, but that doesn’t make it so. Her whole shtick was to pander to young men using sex appeal, and it worked. To complain about it now is hypocritical.
God help me...but she wishes.
Also...excellent reference. :). I keep making my husband/family PROMISE me that if I ever start looking like that, they will tell me. :)
Madonna is misusing that term, and some women will come after her about it. Being out debated on Twitter by a man is not Rape. At a Net Worth of at least $570. Million!!
it is difficult to view her as a ‘victim of the patriarcy’, or of anything other than her own vanity and need of attention.
She’s still alive?
Madonna: “Are you in yet?”
>> Madonna looked at a TV and assessed the augmented-reality part of the show, in which four additional virtual Madonnas, one playing an accordion and another dressed like a bride, would materialize in the televised awards performance out of thin air.
She’s like the queen bug in the Alien franchise. She’s replicated mutated versions of herself
She should take her advice from her hero Slick Willie, and “put some ice on that”.
>>and never ending comments about my age which would never have been mentioned had I been a MAN!
Ask Mick Jagger
Maybe they will let her star in revived TV show like maybe The Munsters, where her talents will fit right in.
I don't think she's their preferred gender.
