If I’m involved in gun battles post-SHTF, I think my few hundred rounds of .30-06 will be a lifetime supply.
I took out a coyote moving at a dead run at 1760 yards off my south deck a few weeks ago with a 6.5 creed. My 308s won’t do that. If four of my buddies didn’t witness it, I don’t think they would of believed me. I get them at 1000 yards plus or minus a bit quite often, but that was the first at that range.
In a semi platform, the difference is large too. 308 will buck fairly well, while 6.5 is a lot less and you watch your rounds going. They hit with about even kinetic energy up to 500 yards, then far exceed 308. Actually even weight bullets, the 308 was hitting at 1000 ft lbs at 500, the 6.5 was at 1350.
I’m a subject matter expert. I usually shoot a hundred or more rounds a week if I’m taking it easy, and have been using 6.5 since 2008. I recognized early on the superiority of the round, and so did the US Army.

The 308 vs Creedmoor battle continues. If you have the money to spend, try the Creedmoor. If not, 308 is just fine.
The article is pushing Creedmoor as a short action rifle cartridge. Fine.
At the moment, for me anyway, inside of 800 yards 308 is great. Beyond that whip out the 300 WinMag or .338 Lapua.

We’re back here again? As good as the Creedmore is, it doesn’t yet qualify as a SHTF cartridge any more than a .243 Winchester. There are TONS of .308 out there, and a variety of guns - including machine guns - that shoot it. I shoot .308 regularly at distances greater than 500yds and occasionally out to a mile. No problems. When you can start buying 6.5 CM in bulk at reasonable prices, and walk into any local small town fishing/hunting store and buy it off the shelf, then we’ll talk about it being a good SHTF cartridge. That’s what’s so great about the 7.62x 39. As lowly as it is, you can find the stuff anywhere - and cheap! And it’s combat-effective out to 400 meters.
Oh? Were you there? You’re welcome to come up and see me shoot firsthand if you like. In all fairness, I have a lot of experience with this overseas, and the first shot didn’t hit, just dropped in behind, adjsut point of aim and go again (Schmidt and bender).

I’m not shooting off my mouth but somebody sure is! It’s more like blowing it out ones arse! My experience with this started in the 60’s with the A Shau, then shot nationally up into the mid 80’s. Your a liar!

The ballistics don’t lie. I love my 308s. Don’t get me wrong, I just like the right tool for the job. My buddy the other Sunday shot 2 foot steel with a Springfield Saint 16” barrel, 73gr 223. The target is 1085 yards. He had a three times magnifier and an eotech red dot. He got 2 hits out of ten. One can do it, but it’s not the best tool for the job.
I will likely build a 300 PRC this year, and see how far she will go. I’m limited to 2750 yards off my deck, but if I can get that, I’ll be happy.
Well if you are saying it was a one time thing, then yes it could have happened. I have made a couple of shots in my lifetime which were pretty much unbelievable.
Now if you are saying you did it because you are so good, then no it is not a reasonable statement.

They had the ballistics figured out in the late 1800’s with the 6.5 x 55 Swedish Mauser and it’s pretty hard to improve on that round.
