In our continuing discussions on whether pocket pistols are good enough to carry for personal protection. We sometimes hear of the small few gun enthusiasts that carry these .22 pocket pistols.
For personal defense the goal is to always "break contact" from the "Bad Guy" if youre ever caught in such dire situation. Breaking contact is to get away from the BG either you had the six sense to avoid the confrontation or caught in the fight. Once you have fired on the BG, the goal is to stop the BG from his attack so you can run away.
Terminal Ballistics
From a terminal ballistics stand point the .22 is not that impressive from a short barrel pistol. But the .22 is more capable than people think. To make this point we looked at these tests that were conducted by the fine folks from Lucky Gunner. Lucky Gunner ran a 1.9 inch snub nose pocket pistols with several types of .22 Magnun loads against a ballistic gel.
This was for measuring the penetration and seeing the expansion. What were striving for is a good 12 to 15 inch penetration with less expansion. These depths are considered good from the FBI standards. So ideally, when combined with good shot placement to the vital areas of the torso, this should deter/stop the BG from attacking you.
.22 Magnum More Umph
For the loyal .22 fans the answer for some more umph to your load is the .22 Magnum. Shooting it from a two inch barrel is quite loud, the recoil is a little more than a .22LR but still easily manageable. Failure to fire at times does still exist with the .22 Magnum. (light primer strike) Many gun nuts know to slighly remedy this by installing a heavier spring, but the trigger pull is now at between 12 to 15 pounds. Yeh, more so than the standard .38 Special. So if this doesnt deter you from not investing in a .22 pocket pistol, lets move on to some decent loads that are specifically for personal defense. Youll also see some velocity, penetration and expansion info results from the ballistic gel. Read the rest of 22 WMR ammo.
Love It!
Frickin' Shark not included... ;^)
Anyone have the S&W Model 51? Just acquired and interested in any comments.
That's why it's important that you never store a revolver with the cylinder bores even the slightest bit wet with gun oil - it will creep into the cartridges and kill the priming compound. The "heeled bullet" design on the .22LR seems to be especially vulnerable to this. .22WMR uses a true copper-jacketed bullet and a crimped case, which makes it less risky.
Had no idea about this stuff. Thanks!
Ive just always laughed at the yahoos buying 22WMR pistols.
It is caused by the economy of scale.
Because I have a number of 22 Mag handguns, I wanted a 22 Mag long gun.
The 10/22 rotary mag is a solid design and there is a Savage A22 Semi-Auto in 22 WMR that uses a Savage rotary mag similar to the 10/22 Ruger mag.
It is not black, has no pistol grip and with its decent sized bolt handle looks no more threatening than a 22 hunting rifle. I had some invasive raccoons in Missouri and that was my excuse.
So here you have a 10 round long gun that will fire all 10 as fast as you can pull the trigger. It uses the same rounds as the LCR 22 WMR, the North American Arms Sidewinder tiny pocket gun or any other 22 WMR.
A 22 WMR is loud, out of long gun or mouse gun it is going to make an impression on a person confronted with its discharge. Use the A22 CCI round or the TNT and you will get some expansion even in the hand gun.
The Savage has the Accu-Trigger, I added a bi-pod and a four power scope.
Its fall at 185 Yards is about 3.4 inches and is relatively flat inside of 120 Yards.
see my 46.
I have shot guns in 20, 12 and 410 but I try to limit my handguns and long guns to 22 WMR and 9mm due to cost. I want a large game long rifle, I just don’t need one, LOL.
I should add that I also have an LCR in .38 as my wife liked its trigger action.
The .22 mag in a 23 inch barrel (Marlin model 25) is just about ideal for large coons. A LR will do the job but the Marlin absolutely nails them.
You are correct about the noise too. Even out of that long barrel it still roars.
I have a buddy that owns a few farms. He had a couple dozen problem raccoons tearing up his place and did the old fly bait and coca cola in a pie pan routine and killed 18 in one night. Too many dogs in my neighborhood for me to try it.
I just got the LCRX in 22lr cause a lawnmower and a pistol is still cheaper than a riding mower.
Cutting your lawn in Florida can be all kinds of exciting!
Last year I shot a 200 pound boar in the ear with my Savage 22 WMR. The boar did a back flip. Distance was about 80 yards.
I had a new factory out-of-the-box from a reputable American Firearms Manufacturer .22LR revolver that had more failures to fire than successful shots, even after cleaning, oiling, etc. I sent it back to them with a clear explanation, and they "repaired" it (much more than a repair, I suspect, it felt and looked like they sent it through their custom shop). I've had probably two failures to fire in 2,000 rounds since then, which amazes me for rimfire ammo. To put it mildly, their repair technician did a very nice job (and saved S&W's reputation for me as a purchaser). It's now my favorite revolver.
For Later,,,
They triggered my sick cents.
He should have both magazines mounted to the others frame. Positive locking for combat lethality and dual simultaneous magazine changes. Probably gain crucial femtoseconds if he would hold the contraption in its proper horizontal firing position.
That guy took online badass correspondence course instruction, I can tell.
Good for her. I am a crap shot and admit it. Center of mass somewhere is the best I can hope for.
No thanks, I’ll stick with 9mm...
Depending on what US state I am in or if back home in Israel I either carry a Ruger .40, a S&W revolver .357 7 shot (NYC easiest to get a carry permit) or a government weapon (9mm) that has varied over the years of issuance.
Competent with all, not great with any.
“Youre much better off with a .38 Special.
Never discount the .38 Special. Has been around forever, +P is especially effective if loaded properly. I don’t own a .357 Mag. but it will give best of both worlds. Close or with some added range. Both are absolutely great rounds.”
It’s hard to beat a .38 Special. When I carry my S&W Model 36 (1 7/8”) it is with factory 148 grain wadcutters @ about 700 fps. The trigger pull is light and smooth, it goes bang every time, recoil is light and easy to control, and the bullet penetrates very deeply. Look at the chart in the article for penetration with this load.
