DECATUR, Texas/FLINT, Mich. (Reuters) - Mickey McMaster is on his 12th pickup truck.

The 61-year old farm equipment dealer in Decatur, Texas, two weeks ago treated himself to a 2019 GMC Denali for around $69,000 - a reward for long hours at work.

“For me this is the Cadillac of trucks, it’s a real luxury vehicle,” McMaster said. “I’ve worked my way up to afford a truck like this and it shows that I’ve earned it.”

McMaster is the kind of customer General Motors Co is banking on as it plans to add 1,000 jobs at a plant in Flint, Michigan that will build a new generation of its largest pickups. Demand from Texas and other heartland states for big pick-ups is providing a lifeline to many workers the No. 1 U.S. automaker is laying off at plants elsewhere....

What a fool. He could’ve bought a $69,000 Mercedes or BMW. And in 10 years that car would’ve been worth maybe $8000-$10,000. Instead he bought a truck that in 10 years will still be worth well over $30,000.

Oh wait.

As I sit watching the TV or on the computer, I can see all the vehicles passing by.

Something struck me maybe five years ago. At one time it was rare to see a pickup with an extended cab. Now I would guess that maybe 90% of the ones passing by have that long cab.

I cannot recall offhand, but there are some trucks on the road today that you cannot, absolutely not, get a regular standard cab. Extended cab or crew cab only.

Good news for Flint. The original home of General Motors.

I bought a 1983 Toyota 4wd pickup for I am pretty sure, $7000. Toyota was having a sale and there were I learned later some very large factory incentives. It was pretty basic, AM/FM radio and that was about it.

It proved to be a great little pickup. Tough and inexpensive run.

Adjusted for inflation, I don’t think any pickup now is even close to that price.

The Ford 5.4 litre engine in trucks is one of the worst on the planet. There are specific You-Tube videos on it’s problems. Many people that use a truck all the time are aware of this problem and are avoiding Ford trucks

I have a 22 year old Ford F150 that still runs pretty good. 5 speed stick.
Low miles - 170,000

I can’t see spending $69,000 on any vehicle.

Even better...he could have bought a used one at a substantially lower price and invested the difference....or, just forgo the truck and invest the money.

Is that a recent problem? I have a Ford truck with more than 325,000 miles on it. It has the 5.4-liter engine, and it’s all still the original powertrain.

If you still had that truck, and if it still ran. You can get $7000 for today. Check out the online ads for used Toyota trucks from 20 and 30 years ago. It is insane.

I have a neighbor with a nearly 2 decade old Ford F150 with a 5.4 liter with 275k plus miles on it. He loves it.

I had an 86 F-250 with the 460 V8.

The engine itself never gave the slightest problem but a lot of small things went wrong.

At only 90,000 miles the ball joints/tie rods were shot. I purchased replacements made by Rockwell and they were far better made. A lot of other odds and ends. Not really a lemon but that Toyota never gave any trouble at all.

A top of the line F150, all the bells and whistles available, can hit $76.

Ford Rangers are available again this year for those who want a lower price point. $47K tops.

Back in the late 80s, my dad bought a stretch cab S10. At first I didn’t care for it until I borrowed it sometimes and I learned love stretch cabs.

I can’t see that kind of money on a pickup truck.

My UK based facility manager who is here for a few years just bought a quad cab Ford F150.

My 22 year old pickup is a small one, a Chevy S10 5-speed stick. Has its original mileage of 52,930. It’s not anything fancy and has only been used to haul stuff short distances, first by my Dad and now me. I hope it lasts the rest of my life.
:^)

and...

there are several with a million miles on them.

BTW ford has not made the 5.4 since 2012 or so.

My F150 has the 5.0 in it, I am very happy with it. 160K on it already, 140K of it towing a loaded car trailer.

the 5.4 in my last one ran fine when traded in with 400,000 miles on it. If you chose to ignore the maintenance on them, they will get even with you. but the only problems i had with it was the exhaust manifolds.

BTW the active fuel management is a known problem on the GMs including the current ones.

and the fiats... well.. they are fiats.

I’ll NEVER own another GM product. Obama and GM screwed me good on my stock.

Thankfully, my ford stock paid off very nicely for me.
