The Ford 5.4 litre engine in trucks is one of the worst on the planet. There are specific You-Tube videos on it’s problems. Many people that use a truck all the time are aware of this problem and are avoiding Ford trucks

Is that a recent problem? I have a Ford truck with more than 325,000 miles on it. It has the 5.4-liter engine, and it’s all still the original powertrain.

I have a neighbor with a nearly 2 decade old Ford F150 with a 5.4 liter with 275k plus miles on it. He loves it.

and...

there are several with a million miles on them.

BTW ford has not made the 5.4 since 2012 or so.

My F150 has the 5.0 in it, I am very happy with it. 160K on it already, 140K of it towing a loaded car trailer.

the 5.4 in my last one ran fine when traded in with 400,000 miles on it. If you chose to ignore the maintenance on them, they will get even with you. but the only problems i had with it was the exhaust manifolds.

BTW the active fuel management is a known problem on the GMs including the current ones.

and the fiats... well.. they are fiats.

I’ll NEVER own another GM product. Obama and GM screwed me good on my stock.

Thankfully, my ford stock paid off very nicely for me.

It depends on the year and yes; the 5.4 does/did have trouble with plugs blowing out on occasion because the designers only made 3 threads for the plugs to screw into. There was a recall for trucks having this issue where they replaced the heads. I'm on my second 2001 5.4L Ford truck and have never had a plug blow out. These trucks generally run 300k-400k. The transmissions sometimes get replaced. It all depends on if they get used for towing heavy loads a lot or just generally beat on. I have heard some of the newer models have had problems though.

It's the gas mileage that's a pain. I only get 13 mpg city and 16 mpg highway. The engine does have 174k miles on it though. My first one with only 60k miles when I sold it got 22 mpg on the highway after I installed a tuner, a K&N air filter, and some Cat back pipes. All to make it run better and breathe better.

I'm just one person though. The next guy might tell an entirely different story about his experience.

Spark plug thread engagement only 2 to 3 turns.

I have a Ford with the 5.4 engine. Just rolled 210K miles.
I pull a 6,000 lb travel trailer with it regularly.
Haven’t had any engine problems.
Put a K&N air filter to give it a bit of a boost.
