At one time back in the day, inside most police cars were equipped with an M-870 shotgun. Then there's an odd ball patrolman with his AR with .223 caliber. Which patrolman has the advantage?
The logic behind the usage of an AR stems from situations where a firearm needed for greater range than a shotgun. Or how about shotgun folks talk about having knock down power to stop the fight with its 00 buck. AR's high velocity & capacity with 30 round mag makes up for lack of Knock Down Power. Which is better?
There needs to be a determination that each gun should be fired at the same target and at the same range. Because the idea is to ascertain some kind of combat effectiveness under stress, a time limit needs to be establish on each stage.
Test
This test was based from Wiley Clapp test out on Gunsite where he had two Range Masters both skilled with the shotgun and an AR go through this special course of fire. (Bill Murphy shotgun and Vince Morgan AR-15)
This course of fire were as follow:
A shooter armed with respective firearm would engage a silhouette at various ranges. First at 15 yards, then 25, 50, 75 and 100 yards. At the command of a whistle the shooter would have 3 seconds to fire off as many rounds as possible onto the target. Read the rest of this shotgun vs AR15.
Next subject; Screwdriver or hammer? Which is better?
Interesting article, but it doesn’t draw any real conclusions other than to show the target they shot at, which doesn’t (to my eye) reveal much.
There ya go.
“Two different tools. Two different missions/tasks.Next subject; Screwdriver or hammer? Which is better?”
Agreed, however it’s always good to have BOTH available incase the need arises, yes?......not to mention, sumptin’ in da pocket. ;^)
Lots of tactical pump and semi auto 12 gauge guns that take hi- cap magazines.
Do with that information what you will.
During Prohibition, the preferred weapon of the Chicago mob was the Tommy gun. However, they ambitiously wanted to expand in rural downstate Illinois. But the rural mobs stopped them cold with shotguns. This established that the terrain is a huge factor in such comparisons.
Seriously. Click bait in our content driven world...
You don’t even have to read the article to know how stupid this is.
In other words, about average for 'Am Shooting Journal'.
A shotgun is great indoors and an ar for outdoors. You need both.
You are talking about close range here. With one trigger pull of the shotgun with 00 buckshot, you get twelve .33 caliber pellets spread out over a 24” to 36” pattern with deadly velocity at a nominal range. Do the math.
223 was chosen for weight consideration.
The AR was designed for the military, where men would be out on patrol and weight considerations were made.
Don't need the same considerations in a patrol car.
Switch to a .308 and you have more knock down power.
Of course proper shot location gives you good "knock down" power.
This article is terribly written. A common core student could do better.

I wonder if you can get it with a bottle opener and nail file?
I wonder how much that thing weighs fully loaded.
Yeah.
Imagine carrying 30 .223 or .308
PLUS another 10 shotgun shells and barrel w/ action.
But when it spends 99% of it’s time being carried by a car...
Can’t imagine taking too many distance shoots from the standing position.
There’s a lot of weight out on the front end of that gun.
