I just had an argument with a Facebook friend who called me "closed minded" when I said I had zero interest in seeing the Broadway musical 'Hamilton'.
She says she won't talk to me until I check out the show for myself instead of "pre-judging it"
I told her that I know it getting universal acclaim, but after reading about concept, it sound really stupid...it appears the premise is "Let's intentionally cast ethnic minorities and women to play white men from the colonial era so 'modern audiences' can 'relate' to the story. I hate when they do that in movies so I doubt I would enjoy it any more if they do that politically correct stunt on Broadway (It's playing here at the Chicago Theater District and they cast "Miguel Cervantes" in the title role of "Alexander Hamilton", just like how the Broadway version has "Lin-Manuel Miranda" as Hamilton ::rolls eyes::)
I also explained that I'm not AGAINST an actor playing another ethnicity, if they can BELIEVABLY pull off that role. For example, I had no problem with Cuban actor Andy Garcia playing an Italian-American mafia figure in The Godfather III. I can buy him as Sonny Corleone's son. On the other hand, I CANNOT buy the very white and very British Benedict Cumberbatch as "Khan Noonien Singh", a Sikh from India. Ridiculous Stunt casting like that ruins the story for me and insults the audience's intelligence.
My friend replied that the musical is great because the music, lyrics, and story are incredibly powerful. My response to that is that is IF the musical is really good and compelling with catchy songs and a strong story IN ITS OWN RIGHT, then they could cast people that actually FIT the roles and it would still work. They wouldn't NEED some gimmick like Snoop Dogg plays Thomas Jefferson. Let's see "Hamilton" performed with actors who actually look and sound like the colonial era founding fathers, and see if still attractions the same "buzz" as the politically correct version does.
Shouldn’t “whiteface” be banned, too?
If I wanted to watch a compelling musical about the founding fathers, I'd pop in a copy of the film 1776.
My daughters love Broadway musicals. They made me go see one and I nearly fell asleep. It did absolutely nothing for me.
I don’t get the appeal of musicals period, but Hamilton especially. Revising history is horrible.
Because it is a minstrel show but politically correct so people don’t have to feel bad about being racist.
Prove me wrong, that is the hype is all about.
Seriously, it's like some bizarre religious thing for them. They'll spend thousands on tickets and then post pictures of themselves at the show on social media, then all their liberal friends have to post about how jealous they are, or how they've seen it like seven times and they would cut off their big toe to see it again. They are so freaking weird about it.
It’s about the guy who gave us the Electoral College.
Word.
That's the interesting thing. Whenever we object to a non-white actor playing a white figure they obviously are NOTHING like, the "fans" of the stupid casting are quick to pull the "you're just racist and want to see straight, white males in everything"
But when we're JUST as adamantly against a white actor playing a character who is SUPPOSED to be a minority (again, Benedict Cumberbatch as 'Khan Noonien Singh'), we get the silent treatment.
And I'm sorry, if the musical was so "good" and stood on its own merits, it wouldn't need to resort to gimmicks like this.
Now, I just sent Impy a post the other day that I finally gave the politically correct "female Doctor Who" a chance, and I enjoyed the episode and was presently surprised by it. But I'm not going to pretend its must-see entertainment or the fact the actress pulled it off doesn't mean changing the character's gender swap wasn't motivated by rampant politically-correctness and she "just happened" to give the best audition for the role. We all know why she was cast, and the reality is that Doctor Who has seen better days.
The Last Samurai.
1) That picture is clearly from an atrocity. Do Not Want.
2) I watched “1776”. Back in the ‘70s. Didn’t much acre for that, either.
i am looking forward to seeing it, but by the time it gets to my off broadway town, the only people playing the multiethnic roles, will be overweight white guys from the community theater.
i believe it is an interesting interpretation of american history, and not a rewriting as some have suggested... a nice allegory for we are all americans.
I don’t know why they like it. I have no desire to see anything praising Hamilton, who was a source of some of the great collectivist evil in the country today.
I am only dimly aware of it from media. Sounds like a negro version of a blackface skit.
The casting call for “Hamilton” specifically said that white actors were NOT to apply. Nice.......
Talk about “cultural appropriation”, what a joke!!!
I will NEVER go to see Hamilton. Lin Manuel Miranda is a bonafide leftist racist. He has nothing to say that I want to hear.
I am not going to sit and listen to black actors rapping, hip-hopping and ghetto-izing our Founding Fathers.
Is this like that ROOTS musical where they re-cast all the characters with white actors? Maybe I’m mis-remembering it.
I’ll bet they don’t cover Hamilton’s suggestion of “citizen at birth” being rejected for the more stringent “natural born citizen” because the founders sought to exclude the children of foreign nationals from being President.
People like Barack Obama.
Exactly.
Yep that picture did it for me. I am surprise Hamilton isn’t grabbing his crotch.
RE: The weird thing... I HAVE noticed numerous “conservatives” like Mike Pence and Dick Cheney have nothing but fawning praise for this musical.
When Pence went to see the show with his family, he couldn’t even get a break.
The cast actually gave him a lecture about upholding our rights and protecting the planet and what not ( Pence was booed by a group of people when he entered the theater ). That was just a few days after the 2016 elections.
See here:
“We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values.”
