Establishing President Donald Trump's sought-after Space Force could cost $12.9 billion over its first five years, according to an Air Force document obtained by CNN.

The Air Force estimates that the first year "additive costs" associated with establishing the new military branch in the 2020 fiscal year, including the creation of a headquarters, would amount to $3.32 billion.

The document also estimates that the Space Force will oversee some 13,000 personnel when it is officially launched.

In a memo accompanying the proposal, Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson calls on Congress to authorize and fund the establishment of a Space Force headquarters in the 2020 fiscal year.

"This would build the foundation of the new department first, allowing us to transfer personnel and programs in FY21 after Congressional approval," she wrote in a memo dated September 14....

The cost of one Gerald Ford class aircraft carrier for five years of a whole branch of the military? Sounds inexpensive to me. Wonder how much I have to bundle to become Secretary of the Space Force?

All of a sudden CNN is all concerned about the cost of government.

CNN can bend over and shove their concern-trolling. Anderson Pooper would enjoy it.

Okay if CNN has a problem then deduct the cost for protecting the satellite(s) they depend on.

Isn’t it refreshing to see Democrats concerned about government spending.

I wonder how much it costs to feed, educate, house, clothe, jail, deport, and give healthcare to illegal aliens here in the U.S. over a five year period?

Go Space Force!

Why, you could build ten miles of the California High Speed Rail with that much money. Think how convenient it would be, to be able to take a train from Chowchilla to Athlone. Now some people might say “Why would I want to take the train to Athlone. There’s nothing to do there. But they’d be wrong. “Cause you can do a lot of neat stuff there. Like take the train to Chowchilla.

Well, people keep on wanting to have a universal draft that would be at least quadruple our defense budget to try to correct parental errors.

But this, something that will actually be useful. Nah. Let's not get the high ground. Let's let the Chinese or Russia or India or the mohammedans have it instead.

Then we can try to play catch up while they drop rocks on our head.

Our military is very dependent on space based satellites for Intel, targeting and communication. These assets must be protected least we dramatically reduce the effectiveness of the soldier on the ground, the pilot in the plane and the sailor on the ship.

A few billion is cheap to maintain an effective fighting force with the a fore mentioned, Intel, targeting and communication.

The train to nowhere in Calif. is expected cost well over $100 billion and never be completed and will not be high speed.

The amount of NASA money Obama budgeted for Muslim outreach oughta cover it just nicely.

We have already “spent” over $30 billion on Puerto Rico
This is a much better investment

...an Air Force document obtained by CNN.

How did CNN get this document? Was it leaked? Was it classified? The actual article may explain, but I will not click on a CNN link.

I would expect that consolidation of its functions into a single military branch would eliminate redundancies that might add up to orders of magnitude more than $13B.

There’s not going to be much of any “new” stuff. The formation of the Space Force is mostly just administratively transferring programs and people from various other places into the Space Command.
