Amid glowing tributes to the life and career of Arizona Senator John McCain on Monday, MSNBC took time to use the Republican lawmakers passing to trash his 2008 vice presidential running mate Sarah Palin, labeling McCains selection of the then-Alaska governor as his biggest political mistake.
McCain made some controversial decisions, some much-criticized decisions. One of those decisions was who he chose to run with in 2008, Sarah Palin, proclaimed anchor Katy Tur early in the 2:00 p.m. ET hour. She then recited a column from Washington Post Associate Editor David Ignatius making that case:
The anti-Washington rage embodied by Palin came back to haunt McCain, in the person of President Trump. My guess is McCain was one of the many millions of decent Republicans and Democrats who could never imagine that the GOP and then the American electorate (or at least the Electoral College) would actually vote for someone with such low moral character.
Tur lamented: I guess there are some out there who could argue that the choosing of Palin and legitimizing that voice, legitimizing that brand of politics, that reality show brand of politics, you could draw a straight line from that to the election of Donald Trump.
Appearing on the program, Ignatius doubled down: I think that choice of Sarah Palin was probably the biggest political mistake that John McCain made in his career.
He continued: There is an insurgency in the Republican Party. Sarah Palin was an early example of it, this kind of, you know, unprepared in the normal sense ex-governor of Alaska.... It was a poor choice. She was so unprepared for the office. Of course Sarah Palin was the current governor of Alaska when McCain selected her as his running mate.
Ignatius concluded: But I think it shows that McCain saw something changing in his party, this party that would spawn the Tea Party movement that really existed to trash Washington, the world that John McCain grew up in.
Leave it to MSNBC and The Washington Post to use the death of one politician to denigrate another.
Here is a transcript of the August 27 exchange between Tur and Ignatius:

Something of Keith Olbersturmfuhrermann's slapped the gum-cuzzling newswhore Katy Whure in the face more than a few times when she was guzzling her way up the news ladder...
The only reason I didn’t vote for Sarah Palin was John McLiar
..as others have pointed out, No Name was supposed to lose—Sarah was getting in the way filling stadiums and all...
Had he selected Lieberman, as he wanted, he might have received 60 Electoral votes instead of the just over 160 he got in 2008.
Two not so small points.
1. His remarks “The fundamentals of the American economy are strong” delivered in mid September as Lehman Brothers was going up in smoke and the markets were getting pummeled. It showed voters that he was ignorant and out of touch with the information they could see in the crawler at the bottom of their screens as he was uttering that mistake.
2. He famously came in from the campaign trail to return to Washington to personally get the stimulus bill passed. Obama, just as much a Senator as McCain, stayed out on the trail and avoided responsibility for the failure of the stimulus bill to pass. McCain looked foolish and ineffective. And lots of people noticed.
He never recovered from that.
Making Mike Schmidt his campaign manager was the worst decision. Counting that campaign he crashed five times.
Palin was and still is McCains only saving grace
No name’s getting ISIS off the ground I think should be his greatest mistake, well the biggest one on his pile of mistakes.
On the plus side for lucky high school football teams across America, Olbersturmfuhrermann DID teach Katy Hoor that “blow” is only an expression...
So. Sick. Of. Hearing. McCain’s. Name.
“She almost caused him to win, so he sent Nicole Wallace to sabotage her.”
And that rat, Steve Smith.
S! paid her dues by taking years of LSM and McJuan abuse.
That can’t be right.
He was labeled a rascist many times over before Obama step foot on this continent.
Google knows it too....

Google, like every other chick, doesn’t forget a thing...
They literally have no idea how real Americans in fly over country think.
The only reason that I voted for McCain was because Sarah was on the ticket.
Whaaatttt?? That was the one decision I ever liked that he made. She made him look like the ‘who-cares’ guy he truly was. Must have been ‘his turn.’
That’s funny. I was thinking the only heroic thing McCain EVER did was stand up to the RoveBushies with his pick of Sarah Palin as VP.
Of course, RoveBush wanted McCain to pick Mitt after the fleeting bipartisan ticket of LiebermanMcCain bit the dust with Rush’s help.
John McCain who helped Lois Lerner use the IRS to go after the Tea Party. Just another reason of many why I do not care for his politics. There are also the pictures of McCain with ISIS members.
Apart from the spark that Palin supplied, nobody *ever* voted for a president because of his VP pick. The assertion is stupid on its face. This media is so fake, it’s ridiculous.
