Need advice on resurrecting my website
self ^ | 8/7/2018 | Capt. Tom

Posted on 08/07/2018 12:47:02 PM PDT by Capt. Tom

Background- MY website tool 'coffee cup' is no longer supported . My computer that had both the website files and the program to maintain it is toast, and I cant use it to maintain the website..

What I need is advice on how to recover my website and bring it down to my new computer, and a suggestion for a relatively simple website tool as my website is not complicated and is primarily informational, with text and photos. I'm not selling anything and don't need bells and whistles, or exotic programs.Basicaally text and photos. The website can be seen at newenglandsharks.com

Thanks in advance. - Tom

Do you know any html? If so, I recommend using your own browser and a text editor program and developing it yourself. Then, all you have to do is upload your css file and your index.html file and you’re all set. You can do it yourself and don’t have to spend any more money.

For text editors you can use notepad. I, personally, use Smultron5. There are others. You just need something that will let you write your basic files.

Get you data off it. Look at WordPress, which is easy to install and build out. Repost your old content. If you site is now down, old URL don’t matter, which removes that complication.

https://www.w3schools.com/ is invaluable to me. I use the current CoffeeCup html editor. I like the split screen and the ability to check the html and css code.

I have a couple of sites that I am upgrading.

Your complete website including directories and photos should still be available on the web server that is hosting your site. You should be able to log on with FTP and transfer everything back to your computer. Otherwise, you can go to your website, right click on the page and click “view source” to get most of what you need, buy you will have to re-create the directories yourself.

Go to your website, right click on it, select ‘view page source,’ save the HTML, then import the HTML into another web editor.

It may not get everything, but it should give you a start on rebuilding your site using a different editing tool.

What do you mean your site is no longer supported by CoffeeCup? CoffeCup is just an HTML editor, and it appears to still be available and supported on their web-site? Why not just download a version on your new computer, then use the built in FTP client to download your old site (assuming that it is still being hosted somewhere)?

Where was your site hosted previously?
If your host was also your registrar (godaddy for example) then you can probably use the built in tools at the registrar to recover your files.
If not, and your hosting account lapsed, you may have trouble unless you renew it, and even then it may be gone.

The wayback machine can help you find old content, but not the back-end code for it (the coffee cup stuff?)

I don’t use anything and haven’t for years, but there is probably a rediculous plethora of tools for various levels of novice (hosted blog sites) to experts (rent a server and run it yourself) and everything in between. So if you just want to sign up for some wordpress type blog, that might be easiest, but not necessarily the best way to get the best exposure.

You might see what out of the box tools your registrar provides.

My son lost dozens upon dozens of pages when someone hacked/stole his website some years ago. He’d been adding content for years starting when he was about age 14 (sailing stuff). We recovered every bit of it recently on the wayback machine - https://web.archive.org

Guessing that you used CoffeeCup’s Visual Site Designer, which is, indeed, no longer supported or downloadable. I have the last supported version of this tool, if you’d like to re-install it. It will still work, but CC won’t support it, of course.

Getting a copy of your current site contents should be doable, as has been suggested by others.

Your code can be tweaked in another HTML editor, but you would have to set up the sub folders to conform to CC’s layout in order to use the same code. It’s not a tremendous amount of work unless you don’t know what to do.

I would be willing to try to help, if you want to contact me privately.

I was able to mirror your entire website using HTTrack (free software) in less than 15 minutes.

There’s more to it than meets the eye. This is not your father’s CoffeeCup.

CoffeeCup has several current design tools, ranging from a sophisticated HTML editor to a modern Responsive Site Designer that uses frameworks from Bootstrap and Foundation Framer.

If this site was built with their old Visual Site Designer, it will be a bit of a chore to bring it back to life as-is, as there is no current tool that will easily open the original files. It would have to be done the old-fashioned way in an HTML editing program under manual control.

It can be done, but will take some time and effort...

And to all who have been so helpful.

I believe what I will do is contact my web host which has done a good job for years and still has my website up.
That would be webhostinghub.com and explain my situation.
If they don't have a webtool recommendation on how to easily download my site into my new computer, and one that will allow me to publish it to the web.I will go back to coffee cup for a recommendation.

One of the reasons that I have not aggressively pursued this problem is I got hit with 3 strokes in a row last winter and it has taken me months to recuperate, when days or weeks are usually what it takes no matter what hits me.

I certainly appreciate the advice and can see there are several ways to solve the problem. - tom

Try this in your favorite browser (such as Firefox):

Load your webpage in the browser.

Select from the File menu: Save as ...

Save as should give you to option to save your webpage, including all related contents.

Note that you should have a FILE.HTM and a subdirectory (containing the related image and text data) with the same names .FILES
