On Thursday morning, 29 March, 2018, a English Bull Terrier escaped from an apartment and started attacking people on the street. A man and a woman were bit on the arms and legs and were taken to the hospital. People attempted to use several items to stop the attacks. They kicked at the dog. They beat it with a hammer. They used pepper spray. Nothing worked until a man with a gun waited for the right moment, then shot the dog. Twice.
From wsls.com:
Paul Burek saw it all unfold and rushed to help. He had a gun in his car and shot the dog after everything else failed to stop the attack.
10 News talked exclusively with him about firing two shots at the English bull terrier.
They pepper sprayed the dog. They beat it with a hammer. Somebody was screaming to shoot it and I, fortunately, had a gun in the car and I went and got my gun and once it pulled away from the people and started walking across the road I shot it, Burek said.
Police impounded Paul Burek's gun.
From roanoke.com:
But police and animal control arrived just then, took control of the dog and confiscated Bureks gun.
(snip)
The animal control officer told the man, I have to be honest with you sir, hes going to be euthanized.
By the time the dog was carried off, however, it appeared to be motionless.
The police have dealt with the same dog in the past. On Dec. 26, 2017 at 2:23 a.m., officers went to the same area because the dog had run off the back porch of the apartment and bit a man on his hand, Smith said. The man went to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. Animals wardens followed up on the incident, but the man did not want to file charges.
Fortunately, the Roanoke police returned Paul's gun in only a day.
From wsls.com:
Paul Burek, the man who shot the dog who attacked two people Thursday, is not facing charges.
He says Roanoke Police have returned his gun.
Animal attacks are not included in surveys of defensive gun uses. But people using a gun to stop dangerous animals is a common practice, especially in rural areas. Attacks such as the one in Roanoke make the news. Animal attacks in rural areas are seldom reported. People simply shoot the offending animal and dispose of it. Sometimes, when the attacking animal is the property of another person, that person will be contacted to recover damages.
The lack of accounting for animal attacks in the gun control debate is deliberate. It is not mentioned by those wishing a disarmed population, because nearly everyone understands that using a firearm to stop a dangerous animal is prudent and positive.
In this case, a firearm was used to stop the attacks when all else failed.
There may be more defensive gun uses against animal attacks than against humans in the United States. In Australia, the only citizens
who are allowed semi-automatic rifles are those who need them to deal with problem animals.

Pepper spray did not work. A hammer did not work. Kicking did not work. A gun in the hands of a cool, responsible gun owner, worked.

What a tragic story. The dog was turning his life around and was an aspiring rapper who had 2 kids from 3 different mothers.

Is this the story where the cops confiscated the gun from a legal owner with a CPL?

Just had to shoot a strange acting Possum just a few days ago, had to do the same to a raccoon last fall.

Yes.
But they gave it back to him the next day.
That is an improvement over waiting for months and having to fight for it in court.

The only time I have ever had to use my CHL was to shoot a pitbull that had my corgi in its mouth. Kicking had no effect. The dog was like a sack of concrete mix. I shot it twice before it dropped my dog and the pitbull still lived. I started researching other ways to stop a pitbull other than having to use my gun again in a residential neighborhood. Everything I read about -pepper spray, billy clubs, cattle prods, etc. were said to be ineffectual against them.

Knives work, but require that you get within contact distance.

Maybe one of those small bats they are handing out to teachers would have worked.

Um, I always have a hard time understanding the “fleeing felon” rule. Why wasn’t this guy arrested? He was no longer “defending” himself or others.
Just kidding. Sort of. I always get hassled for pointing out that Washington State law would allow this (for a citizen to shoot a person leaving after committing a felony in order to stop them).

Powerful, psycho Yorkies...again!? Noooo, dogs bred to damage, bloodlines containing fighting killers. Because there aren’t any breeds to choose from that can’t maul and kill, right?

Here’s a method I never hope to try.....
Stick a finger up his butt-hole.
My barber told me this one time. Where he got that from; I do not know. The premise is - that will surprise the animal to the extent he will not continue the attack.
Unless of course you’re dealing with a fag pitbull. Then, son, you’re on your own.

“But police and animal control arrived just then, took control of the dog and confiscated Bureks gun.”
The guy with the gun let others try their way first...(not really, just a possible scenario)...
1) Owner yells STOP! Dog bites someone.
2) People run. Dog bites someone.
3) A liberal tries to reason with it. Dog bites the liberal.
4) People throw rocks at dog. Dog catches rocks in the air with his teeth, and bites someone.
5) Someone pepper sprays dog. Dog snorts the pepper spray and bites someone.
6) Bystander kicks dog. Dog urinates on their leg and...bites the kicker.
7) Someone hits dog with hammer. Dog eats hammer and bites someone.
8) Finally, someone calls 911 while dog is biting someone else.
9) Gun owner goes to car, gets gun, shoots dog twice. Dog doesn’t bite anybody else.
10) Police arrive (from 911 call), are able to subdue the dead dog.
11) Police take gunowner hero’s gun.
