As Elizabeth Taylor once said: I adore wearing gems, but not because they are mine. You can't possess radiance, you can only admire it.
Its a good philosophy, because when it comes to the worlds biggest, rarest and most extraordinary gemstone discoveries, no onenot even billionaire President Donald Trumpcould afford the possession.
Were not talking about the average diamond engagement ring that sets you back $4,000 and was probably grown in a lab. And were not talking about the $3,000 ruby that was probably treated.
Were talking about the rarest gemstones in the world, like the Guinness Emerald that came out of Fura Gems Coscuez emerald mine in Colombia, where excavation has only reached 10% and the next gem of the century is just waiting to be discovered.
Every year, the mining industry grows by hundreds of billions of dollars. The global economy is booming and demand for precious jewels, particularly colored gemstones, has never been higher.

Thanks. That was very interesting.
Heres the first thing they teach them to say at jeweler school about buying gems,
Yes, but thats the retail price. I have to make some money on it, too.

Dont these huge stones bring bad luck?
Anyone who writes an article saying alexandrite has a scarcity close to diamonds demonstrates an ignorance of gems. Diamonds are not scarce. Theyre merely a controlled market. They are common as dirt. Over 700 tons of gem quality diamonds have been mined in the last century. . . and the Russians are sitting on billions of carats of unmined diamonds where a meteor struck and are not mining them to keep the price up. Natural Alexandrite IS scarce.
Russia is well known for its synthetic diamonds. I suspect they have mastered the art of mimicking natural ones to the point where even DeBeers can’t dectect the difference.
The country song right now, where they say But it can buy me a boat. And Ive been rich and Ive been poor: rich is ALWAYS better.
