How Europeans evolved white skin

By Ann Gibbons

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI—Most of us think of Europe as the ancestral home of white people. But a new study shows that pale skin, as well as other traits such as tallness and the ability to digest milk as adults, arrived in most of the continent relatively recently. The work, presented here last week at the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, offers dramatic evidence of recent evolution in Europe and shows that most modern Europeans don’t look much like those of 8000 years ago.

The origins of Europeans have come into sharp focus in the past year as researchers have sequenced the genomes of ancient populations, rather than only a few individuals. By comparing key parts of the DNA across the genomes of 83 ancient individuals from archaeological sites throughout Europe, the international team of researchers reported earlier this year that Europeans today are a mix of the blending of at least three ancient populations of hunter-gatherers and farmers who moved into Europe in separate migrations over the past 8000 years. The study revealed that a massive migration of Yamnaya herders from the steppes north of the Black Sea may have brought Indo-European languages to Europe about 4500 years ago.

Now, a new study from the same team drills down further into that remarkable data to search for genes that were under strong natural selection—including traits so favorable that they spread rapidly throughout Europe in the past 8000 years. By comparing the ancient European genomes with those of recent ones from the 1000 Genomes Project, population geneticist Iain Mathieson, a postdoc in the Harvard University lab of population geneticist David Reich, found five genes associated with changes in diet and skin pigmentation that underwent strong natural selection.

My thinking is that we are all Africans and we are all Europeans and Asians, etc, etc. I think race if fairly malleable over time and we evolve the traits we need to survive. In fact, I believe race can be switched to a degree given enough time and a change of environment and of course I mean over the course of thousands of years. I also believe that we will all gradually lighten as we increasingly spend time indoors.

Oh now THAT is funny!

The "click" language of the Xhosa, in SubSaharan South Africa, uses less air intake.

Hungarian is part of the Uralic language set which includes Japanese, Sami, and Finnish. It isn't gutteral, nor is it particularly short breathed.

Re: “There is no way anyone can convince me that all the worlds civilizations came from one area of Africa.”

As I understand the hypothesis, almost 100% of human beings currently have mitochondrial DNA that can be traced back 60,000 years to the same mother.

Since there is clear evidence that Humans migrated out of Africa at least 100,000 years ago (and possibly 180,000 years ago), that theory has never made sense to me, either.

Also, there is significant evidence that Neanderthals evolved outside of Africa, and there is no question that almost all modern European and Asian humans have some Neanderthal DNA.

When you go and look at particular DNA talk, there are different waves of groups ‘walking out’ of Africa. Tribe-A goes in this era, Tribe-B goes in this era, etc. Each likely affected by changing weather, drought, and hunting practices.

In our way to view Africa by today’s standards, we fail to often grasp the fact that 150,000 years ago....in some area the size of Iowa, there might have only been four tribal groups (fifteen to thirty residents each), and they might not ever bump into each other. As the tribal units continued...they ‘married’ into each other and evolutionary situations might have been affected by this.

I wonder what the angle is, of this article.

Somehow, with blaring anti-white sentiment in the media, I would expect this article, in one way or another, direct or indirect, to take a shot at honky.

Your joke is truly offensive as it only actually insults one People. All others are given a name but only one is pejoratively described. Not funny. And I love funny.

“That’s the point about race that everyone ignores. Color IS skin deep, but the DNA differences between races doesn’t stop there obviously.”

Absolutely. Here’s a couple of videos that back that assertion.

If I look at someone of a different race and I know that given enough time and the right conditions, he could become like me racially and I could become like him, it makes him much more human to me, akin to a very close brother, in a real sense. This is the Left’s nightmare for people to develop such commonality and closeness.

I don’t think racism is the article’s intent. The same author in another article also discusses the skin color differences among native Africans and how they got that way.

But I do agree that there is blaring anti-white racism. But that’s simply the Left blackmailing whites into giving up their rights, power and money. They would go onto the next race if they were successful in turning the white race into a penniless, defenseless husk.

Early settlers self-selected for risk-taking and resourcefulness merely by being willing to say goodbye to all they knew and get on a boat for a dangerous months long journey to a wild and unsettled place. Then there’s hybrid vigor once they were established here and began intermarrying with other settlers from other places.

There is no way anyone can convince me that all the worlds civilizations came from one area of Africa.

They didn't, and don't. Civilizations are shaped by the conditions in the areas they rise in, not by the ancestral home of all mankind. But the people who created those civilizations all came from ancestors who came from Africa.

If the original humans were black, then they were only black because they needed to block out the UV rays. Once they moved to colder climes they had to lighten to absorb UV rays to produce vitamin D. Black is not the default color of humanity, it’s a response to a specific environment.

Smartest post I've seen today, I agree completely.

I have always been very skeptical that imported European plagues wiped out 95% of Native Americans by 1600.

The conventional wisdom for centuries now has been that all diseases that were propagated across the Atlantic after 1492 were in one direction - from the Old World to the New.

That's undoubtedly true for newer diseases like the Bubonic Plague & the Black Death that came to Europe from Asia in the late Middle Ages and after, and for the worst variants of smallpox, which came from Africa or the Middle East around the time of the Crusades. But the evidence for other diseases being propagated only in the Old-to-New World direction is not as concrete.

But still, that's always been the assumption. And it fits well into the PC Historical view that the New World was a veritable Garden of Eden until its despoliation by the evil white Euros.

The problem with archaeological evidence is that most diseases damage only the soft tissues rather than the bones, and there are far fewer pre-Columbian (ie pre-1492) burial sites in the Americas containing soft tissue that can be examined for the presence of diseases. (Unlike the Old World, where they are still digging up an endless supply of ancient human bodies preserved as mummies or in peat bogs or in ice or whatever).

But it turns out that syphilis is one of those rare diseases that do leave telltale marks on human bones, so that the "skeleton-only" human remains that are typically found can be examined for evidence of it, regardless of whether any soft tissues remain.

So an American archaeologist was astounded to find, in the 1980s, evidence of syphilis-caused etchings on the bones in ancient pre-Columbian gravesites in the southeast US. All the history books said that syphilis was just one more of the many bacterial plagues unleashed on American Indians by the Europeans. Yet here he saw evidence to the contrary.

In the original Scientific American article I read back then, it told of his odyssey across the ocean to Spain to the ancient port cities that were home to the first New World fleets of Spanish galleons. And he obtained permission from several churchyards to dig up graves of men who died just before and just after 1492. Sure enough! There was zero evidence of it before 1492, and plenty of it after.

I didn't find that old article online, but I did find this followup article years later from Sci Am that discusses this politically incorrect "controversy" and how other researchers tried to find evidence disproving his findings - and thought they had, but that ultimately their debunkings haven't held up.

Here's the article - Case Closed? Columbus Introduced Syphilis to Europe

I didn't know until the above article, that the carbon-dating of human remains can be thrown off by hundreds or even thousands of years for people whose primary diet was marine food, because they are ingesting "old carbon" from deep waters.

No, frankly, that statement just makes you NUTS, DELUSIONAL, INSANE,BONKERS, AN UNEDUCATED GIT, SOMEONE OUT OF A MONTY PYTHON SKIT!

You post makes you look like a RACIST!

WHY?

Because you are saying that today, when you see someone of a different race, you do NOT see them as being "HUMAN"! Which FYI is DISGUSTING; not to mention PATHETIC!

And THAT is just how the left wants you to react to the "other"!

Actually, they want you to feel GUILTY, but your total lack of knowledge and understanding, as well as your PC crap delusion, suits them as well.

Look, blacks and whites have lived in the USA, since before it was the USA. There has been some interbreeding and yet, even those with a large percentage of white ancestors, those blacks retain some physical characteristics of their black ancestors. Or, if good enough to "pass", even when they have a child with a 100% white person, that offspring can very easily be darker and show more black traits than white.

Same climates, same food, same everything else and blacks are still black...they haven't changed/mutated! And no matter how much some white kid ( or crazy female adult ) wants to BE black, they aren't!

How many millions of years do you imagine such a thing would take? One hundred million years? More? And until that time, all other races than one you belong to aren't "human"?

Agreed. I thought it was marginally funny, up until that last line completely sucked all the humor out of it.
