How Europeans evolved white skin

ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI—Most of us think of Europe as the ancestral home of white people. But a new study shows that pale skin, as well as other traits such as tallness and the ability to digest milk as adults, arrived in most of the continent relatively recently. The work, presented here last week at the 84th annual meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists, offers dramatic evidence of recent evolution in Europe and shows that most modern Europeans don’t look much like those of 8000 years ago.
The origins of Europeans have come into sharp focus in the past year as researchers have sequenced the genomes of ancient populations, rather than only a few individuals. By comparing key parts of the DNA across the genomes of 83 ancient individuals from archaeological sites throughout Europe, the international team of researchers reported earlier this year that Europeans today are a mix of the blending of at least three ancient populations of hunter-gatherers and farmers who moved into Europe in separate migrations over the past 8000 years. The study revealed that a massive migration of Yamnaya herders from the steppes north of the Black Sea may have brought Indo-European languages to Europe about 4500 years ago.
Now, a new study from the same team drills down further into that remarkable data to search for genes that were under strong natural selection—including traits so favorable that they spread rapidly throughout Europe in the past 8000 years. By comparing the ancient European genomes with those of recent ones from the 1000 Genomes Project, population geneticist Iain Mathieson, a postdoc in the Harvard University lab of population geneticist David Reich, found five genes associated with changes in diet and skin pigmentation that underwent strong natural selection.

There is also the process of environmental mutation where changes in the DNA can occur within a relatively short amount of time passes down directly from within ones own family.
I have to ask myself, how much of what one does personally and comes into contact within one’s personal environment shapes the genes of your decendants for generations?
Someone I knew back when I was in college had a similar theory; but the way he put it was that people who live in hot climates 1) have larger nasal passages so that they can move a lot of air in and out of their lungs to help cool the body and 2) evolve languages that involve large amounts of air moving in and out of the lungs. He said that people in cold climates evolved languages that are more economical of air, to minimize the quantity of air that needs to be warmed before entering the lungs.
I think if all aspects of our race skin color, height, intellectual abilities is the result of human simply trying to survive and thrive in our environments, how can any race marginalize another? How does any racist group like BLM or the KKK have a leg to stand on?
There’s no contradiction, the message is that blacks are the real Europeans and white people are just land thieves with no right to exist.
If the original humans were black, then they were only black because they needed to block out the UV rays. Once they moved to colder climes they had to lighten to absorb UV rays to produce vitamin D. Black is not the default color of humanity, it’s a response to a specific environment.
My own thought that I’m the right environment and enough time, populations can become black and black can become white.

Granted, I have the most info on my maternal side, so that is what I use. It worked on my progeny as well. :-)
Since I can go back about 8 generations, on my maternal side, no...environment has had absolutely NOTHING at all to do with it!
As far as physical traits are concerned, that I haven't touched as much; too many different traits to go by, by this time! OTOH...once certain traits show up, yes, I can work backwards and see who got what from generations past.
No, I can't go back 8 millennia; not even 4! But I don't believe that this article's "facts" are true at all! They don't make any sense and some of the "facts" are incorrect, re the whole where people lived thing!

It’s not as simple as a lesser amount of sunlight. Cold weather requires an indoor lifestyle, which further cuts down on sunlight. Fortunately, it also favored technological smarts, to keep everybody warm and the food preserved and to defend the home and tools and other assets.
This is why IQ is criticized by some, because the tests are designed by historically technological races and subraces and therefore emphasize math and science ability and logic.
IQ is self-defining: It simply means what is tested by the test. The score is a ratio of the test taker’s result in the age range of scores over the test taker’s age, times 100.
There are different kinds of intelligence. I once thought that might be whitewashing things for social purposes but now in my later wisdom I see that it is true. Two cultures can only understand each other in the area in which they overlap.

That is very interesting to me.
I have always been very skeptical that imported European plagues wiped out 95% of Native Americans by 1600.
It will be interesting to compare ancient Native American immune genes to European immune genes from the same era.
Unfortunately, it is my understanding that very few Native American remains have survived from the Pre-Columbian era.
