A 28-year-old man who suffered from postoperative pain was convinced that he could heal himself through swimming in cold water.

Through this technique, he was able to cure his pain when nothing else worked. His experience and the associated report are published in the BMJ Case Reports.

The man behind this story is 28 years old. While suffering from excessive facial redness, he underwent an operation (endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) that cut off the triggering nerves in his chest.

Although the operation went perfectly, he subsequently suffered severe and...

If it turns out to work on other patients, this alternative to powerful painkillers and physiotherapy would be a big step forward in postoperative treatments.

Maybe that’s why water boarding doesn’t work...try again with warm water.

If the pain is due to inflamed nerves then I can see that cold water would help. Interesting.

Very interesting, but the short article doesn’t say much.
A. How long did the pain relief last?
B. How frequently would he choose to swim for this purpose?
C. How minimally cold must the water be to produce this effect?
D. Must he avoid heating the body up too quickly afterward, or IOW, must the body remain in a state of uniterrupted coldness for a particular period of time, even after leaving the cold waters?

Good for this young man, that he found some pain relief that didn’t fully rely on drugs that may become addictive.

Guess some helpful stuff can happen when we get up and move and interact with the world like we are designed to.

I think so. I had heard stories like this about people’s pains being gone when they fell in a cold water, but now I am glad to see the science backing it.

Nah, I think it is just the brain learning how to ignore particular signals.

The cold water on the body distracts from the mind from the other pain, allowing it to be evaluated and classified.

This may be awesome news to people who live in and near Michigan, but traveling all the way to Coldwater is not practical for some folks.

As an aside query, how do they boil eggs in Coldwater?

Interesting. Might be something to this ? Anecdotal.
Family went to this place - Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in gapevine texas

It features different ice stuff, like below:

Lone Star Christmas
ICE!® featuring 'Twas the Night Before Christmas
ICE!® is a walkthrough holiday attraction kept at a chilly 9 degrees that features over two million pounds of hand-crafted ice sculptures and five ice
slides. This year, ICE!® brings to life Ma in her kerchief, Pa in his cap and other lines from the famous holiday poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas.

I had the flu. I felt like dammit to hell when I went through the ICE exhibit.
By the time I got our of there, everything was relieved. aches\pains gone. I could breathe and the cough was gone.

That lasted about an hour.

Well, I’ve had a triple bypass, double enarterectomies, renal artery bypasses, a broken hip replacement, and several other surgeries, and I can say I’d rather suffer the pain than swim in COLD WATER.

I’d rather fight the pain until it makes me pass out than swim in cold water.

Did the tour last an hour or did the relief from the flu last an hour?

After my wife had back surgery, she was sent home with a cold therapy unit similar to this one:

You fill the chest with ice and water, and a small electric pump circulates the ice water through the pad.

What did this guy do that was so different?

I was givern a similar gadget for an industrial accident to my left hand...an oval heated bowl and a supply of wax...immerse hand in warm wax...withdraw and allow to cool....peel off wax.

It was just the right size to de-feather a second duck.

(accident involved a cooking pot...chopper and a feisty duck)

I’ve had both shoulders surgically repaired which requires a very painful 3-4 month rehab to get to about 80% functional, and another 6-9 months for 95%. I also have a bad back and neck from football days.

Crushed ice in a quart freezer zip lock bag is the best pain reliever. Placed on top of a washcloth and wrapped with ace wrap - it’s better than the pain pills. Supposed to only leave it on for 20 minutes, but screw that. I just add another layer of washcloth and leave it all night. The crushed ice lasts 6-8 hours vs. those gel cold packs which only last about 20 min.
