If the pain is due to inflamed nerves then I can see that cold water would help. Interesting.

I think so. I had heard stories like this about people’s pains being gone when they fell in a cold water, but now I am glad to see the science backing it.

Nah, I think it is just the brain learning how to ignore particular signals.

The cold water on the body distracts from the mind from the other pain, allowing it to be evaluated and classified.

I relieve my post operative pain with cold water, seltzer water with ice cubes and whiskey.

I’m not certain of the science behind it, but I can attest that cold water over on an injury does help with pain relief following surgery. At least it did for my son. When he was 16, he tore the labrum in his shoulder and needed surgery. Prior to surgery, we met with the surgeon to talk about expectations. He said that he would prescribe strong pain meds to help with post-op pain. He also mentioned that some patients have opted for using a cold therapy machine in lieu of pain meds. That is, a machine that has a wrap around the shoulder with ice cold water flowing over the area on and off all day. We chose the machine over meds. My son used this machine(following all recommended instructions) for the first week after surgery without the need for pain meds and fully recovered from the injury.
