For some Americans, going out to dinner is a treat, planned and budgeted for. For others, it's just another Tuesday night. And Wednesday. And Thursday.
And that second group of people is becoming the majority. The number of Americans who enjoy cooking is declining, while the prevalence of food delivery startups, meal kit subscriptions and culinary-centric television shows grows.
In the Harvard Business Review, researcher Eddie Yoon shares data he's gathered over two decades working as a consultant for consumer packaged goods companies. Early in Yoon's career, he conducted a survey that determined that Americans fell into one of three groups:
15 percent said they love to cook
50 percent said they hate to cook
35 percent are ambivalent about cooking
When Yoon conducted the same survey 15 years later, the percentages had changed. Only 10 percent of consumers professed a love of cooking, while 45 percent said they outright hated it and 45 percent were on the fence....

I love to cook...especially on old days when its so nice and warm in the house and the aromas fill the room...
I learned at an early age cause my mom was already out drinking by the time I got back in from the woods when I was 11 or 12.
That's how my semi-infamous "Fried Spaghetti" came to be. Hehehe.
Cooking is fun! d;^)
I love cooking, way cheaper than a delivered $13 meal! Got lots of handy gadgets and toys, too, they make it easier. Recently bought a big countertop convection oven, best $50 I’ve spent this year!
I was a Coast Guard cook... way back when.
Loved it! But there was no money in it. One hitch. But I enjoyed every day I was in.
Who didn’t see this coming when they pitched HomeEc out of public schools?
“It sounds bad that so many cant cook worth squat.”
The article was about people who don’t LIKE to cook, not about people who can’t cook.
I can cook, did it for many years, but I never really liked doing it-——it was something that had to be done, like laundry.
I cook as little as possible now.
.
To us, food is medicine. Going out to eat is a downgrade. For those times when we risk it, we usually both feel ill afterwards.
Our homemade food is higher in nutrition and less dangerous to eat because we prepare our REAL food with clean hands and utensils in a clean kitchen.
I loved cooking for the family. there were always 6 of us and visitors. Made my own bread and everything. I was a good plain cook.
I loved cooking holiday meals for a crowd.
Now I have no family and no holiday meals.
So I boil a steak or a fillet, pour mixed salad out of a box and have dinner.
This sounds pretty high...Most people I know cook and go out to eat for special occasions, or truly hectic days.
I enjoy cooking and using Hello Fresh as a meal ingredient delivery service takes away the shopping drudgery. Additionally, it ensures I get just what is needed for the 2 of us rather than me buying too much for just two people. It actually helps reduce costs, IMO.
That’s my family. We work full time, I go to school part time, we have 2 kids playing high school sports.
I’m not cooking during the week.
I love to cook, but I hate cleaning.
I love to cook. Guess that puts me in the top ten percent. Now if I can squeeze my way into the top 1%...
I love cooking, too. I have had spectacular successes with some of my inventions, but the failures have been far too notable to forget. It is fun and we have explored the foods of many different cultures over the 50 years I’ve been cooking. My biggest failure of late was making bone broth. It was perfectly horrible, totally unedible, and while it smelled good, I can’t get the smell of the bones out of my head, literally. Maybe one of you can help with a good recipe for bone broth and a way to forget the smell of those bones...rank and, even after a vigerous washing, just this side of necrotic. Gads!
I’m thinking of doing a cooking class for young cooks at the local community college.
It’s nonsense that people don’t like cooking - most of them have never lived the lifestyle of cooking - with the whole family helping and planning meals. To most people it is a lonely slave function from a-z and it should be a family thing. For busy singles, cooking for the whole week should be done on the weekends.
“we prepare our REAL food with clean hands and utensils in a clean kitchen”
Same here. Better health-wise and we save money.
Put a skillet on the stove and turn heat on tomedium. Add your choice of oil/ butter in pan. Let it warm for 20-30 seconds. Crack an egg and put in pan. Wait 3-5 minutes. Ready to eat.
Cooking ain’t rocket science even if French chefs would like you to think that it is.
OTOH, any wife will tell you that the same dish cooked & served to the same standard tastes much better with a restaurant wrapped around it.
;^)
“Most people I know cook and go out to eat for special occasions, or truly hectic days.”
Same here. Probably has something to do with places we live, or life styles we work.
90% of Americans don’t like to cook, but 15 % love to cook?
Huh?
