Indrek Wichman, a mechanical engineer professor at Michigan State University, has eyed a troubling trend of social justice warriors making their way through the humanities and social sciences and, to his despair, they now have their sights set on leveling their destruction on engineering.
WichmanHaving spent 30 years teaching mechanical engineering, Wichman acknowledges things have changed dramatically and is concerned that feelings and micro-aggressions have taken a predominant role, much to the detriment of the hard sciences.
The world we engineers envisioned as young students is not quite as simple and straightforward as we had wished, he states in a paper in IntellectualTakeout.org, because a phalanx of social justice warriors, ideologues, egalitarians, and opportunistic careerists has ensconced itself in Americas colleges and universities. The destruction they have caused in the humanities and social sciences has now reached to engineering.

Exactly.
Most of the SJWs are from the lower, less rigorous and intellectual rungs of academia: Journalism, political science, sociology, philosophy etc., as are their students. The would love to invade and conquer engineering, sciences and math, and make it more inclusive.
Science has to a large extent, already been invaded (i.e. psuedoscientist AlGore and the global warming scam).
Yep... I had rookie chemical engineer working for me about 8 years ago that pretty much fit that description. Lasted one year then quit just ahead of being layed off for performance. She took a new job with a city on the east coast working in their city engineering department. Not much of an engineering job for a ChE graduate.
I haven't since and probably will not in the future even interview a new graduate from that university. Glowing recommendations from professors, respectable GPA, internships, etc. Bogus. I had to show her how to do things that came straight out of freshman chemistry.
Kalkulous be rasist.
Still the university is pressuring the college to increase its pass rate. Too many are failing out of engineering and the bureaucrats don't want the money train to stop. So we are looking at ways to further coddle these kids who lack the intelligence or ambition to complete their degrees.
More unqualified engineering grads headed your way!
In 1972, I entered an engineering school with 500 other freshmen.
In 1976, at graduation, only 125 received their degrees.
75% of the entering class did not graduate.
Engineering is a very tough discipline.
Are the completion rates similar today?
If they’re failing, it must be the fault of the racist professor.
For the seventies that sounds about right. I was at NJIT, where the attrition rate for chemical engineering was 87%. I was in electrical, where the attrition was 67%.
So the buzzwords and bullshyte regurgitated by edumacated poodle herders fails to compile into anything functionally useful.
Imagine that.
Just hire a contractor - we’ll SALVAGE it for ya!
;-D
Socialists destroy everything.
Affirmative Action!!
Watched it all play out starting back in the 70s in the Bell System, courtesy of the Nixon DoJ.
Because those subjects are racist they will be dropped.
As long as real work and effort are required, certain groups will always be under-represented in the STEM fields. Rather than keep high standards, they’ll just lower them so more minorities and females can pretend they have STEM degrees - and woe to any company that expects knowledge from them!
“How in hell did they make it past algebra/geometry/trigonometry, physics, chemistry?”
That is why a new major, engineering education is being created. That being said, that major belongs in the education department at colleges and universities, not in the engineering departments. In general education majors don’t spend much time taking STEM courses.
There will always be income disparity as long as people with skills/knowledge earn more than those with neither, and as long as some people work while others won’t.
As with all disadvantaged tokens, this is not about offering education or job opportunities; it is simply about paying a disadvantaged minority (black, Hispanic, and/or female) to pretend they are engineers. Actual work isn’t even part of the equation.
Licensing exams are key to ending this façade; now they just want to make those easier as well.
Now there is a lawsuit waiting to happen....
You excerpted your own blog. Why not post the entire thing instead of stealing from FR? Why blog pimp against the rules of FR??
Of course; many major in education because they CAN’T do math/science. That is why public schools today are so useless; when someone who really earned a STEM degree is paid the same as someone with a “black studies” degree (due to union work rules), they simply opt for the private sector - and a “black studies” graduate ends up pretending to teach math and/or science.
I can’t tell you how much of my children’s schoolwork is self-taught via internet (at the suggestion of the teachers themselves); you visit a website complete with graphics and listen to a man describe (in clear, concise English) various calculations and such.
Speaking of engineering...
—that (25%) was the expected graduation rate when I started engineering school in 1958—
