At an increasing rate, Americans separate themselves into culturally and ideologically homogeneous enclaves.
Last week there were two telling incidents one small, the other more consequential that spoke volumes about the state of our national life. Lets start small. Over in Seattle, in the midst of a debate over juvenile justice, a city-council member invoked his Republican friends as a symbol of the broad-based agreement that incarceration policies need to change. One of his colleagues, Kshama Sawant, snapped back with the proud declaration that she didnt have any Republican friends. The crowd cheered.
Sure, its but one small incident, but consider something bigger. The state of California is in the process of taking a series of political steps that are not only cementing its status as a progressive enclave, its stumbling toward its own foreign policy. After Donald Trump withdrew America from the Paris climate agreement, California governor Jerry Brown rushed to fill the void. California is touting its collaborations with China to combat global warming. Heres Brown, in reporting by the Sacramento Bee:
It is a little bold to talk about the ChinaCalifornia partnership as though we were a separate nation, but we are a separate nation, Brown said of the state, with nearly 40 million residents and the worlds sixth-largest economy. Were a state of mind. I include Silicon Valley, I include the environmental activism, the biotech industry, agriculture. This is a place of great investment in innovation.
Indeed, California has such a different view of the relationship between citizen and state, its virtually seceding from the Constitution, overriding the First Amendment time and again for the sake of social justice. And now its legislature is even taking the first steps to implement a $400 billion single-payer health plan....

Then can its statehood be revoked and reduced to a territory?
Who cares what David French an ardent Never Trumper thinks?
Hmmm. Does she have any American friends?
Didn’t we know this very shortly after Bath House Barry’s pResidency of 2008? I appreciate the article, just seems obvious.
We need to keep Interstate 8 so we can maintain access to a Pacific port. California can feel free to put customs booths at all the exits (other than the one for the Port of San Diego) for anyone wishing to enter their country from the United States.
I lived and worked in Calufornia for forty five years. My grandparents and mom and auntie are buried there. I have good friends left there. Raised my daughter there.
When her time for college came she went to The Military College of the South...aka North Georgia State College and University ( now known as University of North Georgia). She wanted to be a nurse. A great school and location. She fell in love with a Georgia boy and they got married after school was done.
They stayed in Georgia and so I moved to be closer to family. Though she misses her friends they will never go to California except for a few days vacation.
Wait till the water and power stops flowing to CA from the Hoover dam.
Kids in black hoodies throwing rocks and bottles are mere cannon fodder of the real enemy. It's going to take force to dislodge those who are actually in charge of slowly stealing that American territory.
And if they're allowed to secede, as you foolishly want them to, other states will follow. In short order, the whole Union will be broken, and the country will be too splintered and weakened to resist an all-out attack from foreign aggressors.
Is that what you want, or have you not stopped and thought through the logical ramifications of what you're proposing?
The Norks may just do that to LA
And they government employees ONLY seem to hire those that agree with them.
This is why we need a top-to-bottom purge.
You have time to do politics at work? Then you must not have any REAL work to do...
You missed San Francisco.
In the mid 1800’s, the Divorce lead to Civil War.
Wait till the Colorado quits flowing to CA
That is pretty much what i think. Jerks like French caused a lot of what he i commenting on to happen. F him.
I would rather live in a smaller just constitutional nation than go down the collective tubes as one huge socialist unit.
We need nothing from California. They can go. Good riddance.
Why would the USA do that? For what purpose?
The sooner we divorce the better.
It’s a clear cut case of irreconcilable differences. Why continue the misery when both sides want out?
Most of California’s land is in conservative hands. Why would you want to condemn free people to socialist rule?
When Virginia seceded Congress didn’t just abandon the loyal Americans in the western part of the state, they acted to sever loyal West Virginia from Confederate Virginia and I hope that Congress would do the same thing for the loyal parts of California.
