The Christian governor of Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday for committing blasphemy against Islam.
While running for governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, also known as “Ahok,” said his opponents were inaccurately citing the Quran to say voters cannot vote for a non-Muslim.
Despite trying to make Islam seem like a more tolerant religion, Purnama’s comments were reportedly edited and shared in a video that caused mass protest and outrage from the Islamic community.
On Nov. 2016, at least 200,000 Islamic protesters took to the streets of Jakarta and demanded Purnama be thrown in jail for blasphemy.
The Guardian reports that the head judge of the country's five-judge panel, Dwiarso Budi Santiarto, told the court Purnama was “found to have legitimately and convincingly conducted a criminal act of blasphemy, and because of that we have imposed two years of imprisonment.”
The judge continued, “As part of a religious society, the defendant should be careful to not use words with negative connotations regarding the symbols of religions, including the religion of the defendant himself.”
Another judge, Abdul Rosyad, said the two-year sentence was because “the defendant did not feel guilt, the defendant’s act has caused anxiety and hurt Muslims.”
According to Reuters, Purnama is appealing the court’s decision.

No, actually he wasn’t, the Koran is evil and he was trying to make it sound tolerant.

And in the United States, one can be fired for talking like a Christian... or using Jesus’s name with reverence with the ‘wrong’ person hearing it... or having a Bible at work... and one day, if the liberals keep it up, you will be put in prison for offending their “religion”... and it doesn’t take much... they consider being an infidel a sin against their “religion”. you either convert or they are ordered to kill.
The most disturbing thing about this is — Ahok ( the nick name of the Christian governor who was jailed ):
1) Was the governor of Jakarta, Indonesia’s LARGEST city.
2) Was the friend and ally of the Indonesian President.
3) Was jailed for 2 years ( a harsher sentence than what the prosecution requested, which was a light suspended sentence ).
If such a prominent and well known person can be brought down and humiliated this way, what will happen to normal Indonesian citizens who say something the religious authorities consider blasphemous?
And note this — Indonesia is considered one of the most moderate and relatively tolerant Muslim countries in the world.
This does not bode well.
I know when something I revere is disrespected, it makes me want to go outside and riot, burn a few things, maybe overturn some cars. How about you?
This case was only about 10% about religion, and 90% about politics. Ahok was the best governor Jakarta has had in the last 50 years, since Ali Sadikin, who was the only other Christian to hold the position. His approval rating was almost 80%, and he was quite effective in his policies and operational manner.
But he is Jokowi’s man, and Jokowi must be weakened before the next presidential election in 2019. This is all being orchestrated by Prabowo, SBY, Kalla, and remnants of the Cendana mob, who have made a diabolical pact with the FPI and some disgruntled generals. The scumbag Prabowo will have another shot at winning the presidency, with SBY’s son as his VP.
I do hope that Jokowi has the sack to pardon Ahok, as I believe he may hold that power.
