A lot of the Silicon Valley elite are doing extreme experiments on their bodies in hopes of prolonging their lives and improving their health. The latest fad among this set is sticking to a so-called 'ketogenic' diet that's exceptionally high in fat and low in carbs and is considered an experimental treatment for diabetes. Think Atkins, but way more extreme.
Ambar Bhattacharyya, a managing director with Maverick Ventures, initially embarked on a low-carb, high-fat "ketogenic" diet during the due diligence process for a startup called Virta Health. The diet was designed to transition his body from burning fat as its primary fuel source, rather than glucose. Those on the diet typically eat less than 30 grams of carbs each day.
He lost about 7 pounds in the first week, but gave up after a few months. "I started to get really cranky and had to drink a lot of coffee," he recalled. "That meant a lot more bathroom breaks during our partner meeting."
Bhattacharyya said that 2 other investors at the office tried it, meaning about a third of the office was on ketogenic diets.
Virta, the company that caught Bhattacharyya's interest, is geared at helping people with type 2 diabetes get off their meds by coaching them to adopt lifestyle changes including carb restriction. Its doctors have mixed feelings about body-hacking venture capitalists trying to get into nutritional ketosis, without supervision.....

My A1C is 13.5.
“I would not recommend it for more than 3 or so days a week as carbohydrates are needed for healthy brain function - especially for women.”
Actually, that’s not true. You cant really cut your carbs to less than about 50 grams a day, and that’s plenty for the brain.
I shudder to think how much I would weigh if I didn’t discover low carbing many years ago. Intermittent fasting complements it very well.
As to lengthening lifespan, I don’t see how that can really happen. A low calorie diet causes your cells to reproduce less often thus slowing the rate at which your telomeres(the actual age clock attached to DNA) are used up. But I don’t see how moving your calories to fat will change aging.
What did the Greeks say? Oh yeah, Moderation in all things. What we can learn from history.
Calorie depravation has been shown to extend lifespan in many animal models.
Ketogenic diet and periodic fasting mimic calorie depravation through several possible pathways, including lowering insulin and chronic inflammation.
*YUM!*
Can’t see how this can work, given that there’s no money to be made for Big Pharma and little to be made by Big Doctor, and the government is against it.
Hmmm...come to think of it, how can it not work?
It works amazingly well
No it doesn’t. Any fat that isn’t transfat is good on the HFLC
The fat profile of animals raised on grains is quite different than that raised on their natural diet of forage. the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio is much higher. omega-6 is linked with inflammation
Ivor Cummins and Dave Feldman are engineers who are teasing out the signal from the noise.
Extremism does work! Near zero carb (ketogenic) and near zero fat (Esselstyn etc) both have success stories. It is the combination of high fat with high carb/sugar that has made us sick and fat.

Significant amounts of Omega 6 are loosely linked to some inflammation - primarily with transfats/veggie oil. Other research shows both Omega 3 and Omega 6 from natural sources (including beef) are good for inflammation. Personally, I don’t find things not replicable to be very believable. Having personally done HFLC diet (and know plenty of other people with the same including most HFLC research) with plenty of grain fed beef and had my health shoot up and weight go down, I have a hard time buying what you are selling.
I lost a hundred pounds on keto. Lowered my blood pressure within 3 months of starting with zero extra excersize. I was in the predibeates range before keto and in the normal range after a few months. The only downside with the diet is not being able to eat junk food and all the extra salt consumption.
The real story here is how “silicon valley” is obsessed with “living longer” — it’s worse than that: every other issue of Wired has some ridiculous story about immortality.
Seems that if you can write code you ought to be a god.

Grass fed cows are also necessary to produce the proper milk for butter.
Highly recommend Kerry Gold Irish Butter. It’s from grass fed cows and the butter is delicious.
Agreed. It is the best.
I am not “selling” anything. Grass fed beef and grain fed beef are completely different in appearance, taste and nutrition profile. People I know who have never tried grass fed are amazed at the flavor when they do try it. Many of the ranchers who do grass fed also avoid hormones and antibiotics. If one prefers “medical meat”, eat conventional :-)
