Donald Trumps flair for connecting with veterans won him an overwhelming share of their votes, but the durability of the alliance is already being tested as Trumps search for a Veterans Affairs secretary veers in a direction that has alarmed some of Americas most influential retired soldiers.
Under pressure from conservative activists, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and organizations funded by the Koch Brothers, Trump is contemplating choosing an agency chief who would upend the entire veterans healthcare system. That would come over the protest of the countrys major veterans groups.
An appointment like that could prove an early test of whether the voters who backed Trump in November will continue to stick with him when his agenda smacks into interest groups that have been crusading on their behalf for decades....

The LA Times is Fake News.
Um...the VA does need upended, turned on it’s head and shaken out all the corrupt management into the street.
Thats a start.
Why do I have the strong intuition that this reporter is trying to create a rift rather than report on one?
“Veteran’s Groups” and veterans aren’t necessarily the same thing
And their only objective is government assistance... Liberals in the media are playing an old game: divide and conquer. They must use their influence to convince their enemy that their enemy is each other, not themselves.
When I hear “major veterans groups”, I think of the American Legion and VFW, and perhaps AMVETS or DAV. Not this outfit. There are lots of special interest groups including those we saw refuse Trump’s donoted money because of some crap or other. So I’m skeptical. What I know from listening to veterans active in the VFW is they want what Trump has promised: treat veteran health as the first priority, including but not limited to providing access to non-VA doctors and hospitals.

I see Los Angeles Times up there.
I get suspish.
The problem is that the VA has morphed from an agency tasked with taking care of wounded warriors to being the last chance healthcare agency for veterans who are indigent. That change has enormously increased the VA’s workload; it cannot keep up. I recommend trimming way back those who are eligible. It should be for wounded vets and those with career disabilities. The left will scream but who cares.
You gotta wade through half the article before they even get to the point.
Article is more like a hit-piece on Koch than a discussion of Veteran care.
I have less enthusiasm than most for privatization, but this is just pure speculation.
Maybe the VA needs to be upended all things considered
Fake news.
They write as if these so called veterans groups speak for all veterans.
Bill Clinton thought the sailors on the USS Cole were soldiers. Liberals are stupid all of them.
Trump ran on upending the VA and received more Veteran support than any candidate in recent history. Now the Fake Liberal Media says they are bailing on him for following through with promises.
Such a lie.
And I love how they toss in the spooky Koch Brothers - who have no connection to Trump. They refused to fund his candidacy.
Let’s face it. AL and VFW are in the swamp. They pretend to seek benefits for us vets. Mostly they see ego trips for their leaders. They convince politicians to bribe us for our vote.
The way the politicians act towards us embarasses those moms on welfare.
Let’s face it. Our side has a lot of hypocrites on this topic.
LA Times people, LA Times.
Fake news go back and try again LaTimes
My dad was eligible for VA healthcare but mostly chose private as it was better.
