I am not a Trump supporter, to say the least. And I dont agree with most of his policies and rhetoric. That being said, as an entrepreneur and researcher on the subject of fear and rejection, I see all people through the lens of their relationship with rejection.
As a result, I found Trump's candidacy fascinating. In my newly published TED talk on rejection, I discussed this phenomenon: that the people who changed the world, against overwhelming odds, were not the people who avoided rejection, but those who embraced it and used it as their power.
Unfortunately, the power of rejection is an amoral power. It was used by my personal heroes such as Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but also by ruthless dictators such as Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin.
In the case of Donald Trump, its too early to predict how his presidency will unfold, but one thing was clear -- Trump understood and used the power of rejection better than all of his opponents. Here are three major reasons why.
1. Trump actively sought rejection to build his tribe and jumpstart his campaign. Most politicians run away from rejection. During the primaries, Trumps traditional and well-funded opponents such as Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio read roundly crafted speeches, used carefully assembled focus groups, and avoided controversies and rejections like plagues. As a result, we ended up with polished yet robotic candidates trying to appease to everyone....

If 'I'm no fan of Trump' didn't give me pause, 'In my recently published Ted lecture on rejection' would have me running for the exits.
And probably the barf bags.
It goes to the heart of most people’s desires: we want to be popular/loved/admired and we’re willing to do almost anything to get it.
Trump did the opposite. He made his unpopularity an asset and a source of strength. He projected confidence and bravado in the face of overwhelming odds. Most people wouldn’t or couldn’t do it.
He won by making the election a referendum on his opponent rather than him. If you can diminish your enemy and raise yourself, you will win. The advice isn’t from Trump; its from Machiavelli.
The man who plays politics better than the rest and uses the passions of human nature to dominate others, is a winner. Its a script as old as time. Studying it can lead us to learn how Trump succeeded where others had failed.
No. I don't think he's even been on the channel. He was interviewed by a local Fox affiliate somewhere, but I think this is one of those random op-eds that papers and websites run to fill out their space.
When your only tool is a hammer, pretty soon every problem starts looking like a nail.
Definitely. He's pushing his own theory. Still, there is something in it. Trump definitely took a very different route from the one politicians take. He wasn't trying not to offend every last possible voter group. Maybe somebody can come up with a better way of expressing what he did than "using the power of rejection."
A bunch of yapping egomaniacs who feel that their every syllable and impulse is the Wisdom of the Ages.

I’ll bite. Call it the Microbrew Revolution Theory of Politics. As I grew to love craft brewing, it became clear that mainstream brewers (the Buds and Millers of the world) were not incompetent at their craft, but based their corporate strategy on offending the fewest number of drinkers, in an effort to expand their appeal to new markets. As a result, their totally bland product continually evolved in the direction of milquetoast over time...it didn’t taste bad... it just didn’t taste at all.
It is like the establishment pols who test each message of theirs on focus groups, refuse to go on the limb for anything, they end up as useless as teats on a boar. Trump, in contrast, is the amazingly hoppy IPA, which bites the palate, lingers in the throat, and offends every liberal beer drinker in the room. But it is so darn impressive it captivates all in the room. (You get the drift of my analogy)
Pretty good article. Can’t really disagree with the argument.
I am my own subject of study when it comes to the question, "Why did Trump appeal to me?"
As far as I perceive an answer, it is that he "stepped up" and"spoke out" when others were unwilling or unable to do so. He was daring! Fearless, even! When everyone else was ruled by calculation. That is the Calculus of Fortune.
Thank you for posting this. Yes, he is touting his product. Yes, he is not a Trump supporter. Yes, there are other reasons Trump won. But after a quick read I’d say there is some validity to his argument. Trump really doesn’t care about rejection and he knows how to use it. There’s a lesson there for all of us.
The Power of Rejection is the arrogant salesman who does not respect the answer no, he continues to send email spam and US mail spam to your mailbox.
He should be in prison.
As a parent, he drives his child to suicide.
I thought that was a really good article! I love the last bit!
“The day before the election on November 7, when all the polls showed Clinton as an overwhelming favorite, I went to both Trump’s and Clintons websites looking at their schedules on election night.
On Clintons site, it said ‘Election Night Related Events’. And on Trumps site, it said ‘Victory Rally and Party.’
Somehow, I had a sense then which campaign was more cautious and which one was more fearless.
In battles, whether with sports or presidential elections, if you have to bet on one side, always bet on the fearless side.
OK, that's all I need to know. Nothing worth any further worth reading with this bozo.
Blah blah blah blah blah. Rules for radical - ridicule and demean your enemy.
The only thing that comes out of the mouths of leftists is flies and feces.
Juan looked like he was constipated and ready to cry.
I think Donald Trump is just a supremely talented man who also happens to be an American patriot.
He didn’t plan the events that took place over the last year. No man is capable of such future event planning. Or of conceiving a sociological scheme of such complexity as to stir the wildest psychosis now demonstrated in the media, and by this author.
He set a course and gave it his all, because he wants to do what’s right for the US.

That was so resonant I had to ensure it was recorded again.
Ted sucks. All of them.
They suppose they are smarter and more insightful than everyone else when it’s only the dullest who give them any credence.
All I needed to read. Stopped there. ;o)
Is this some kind of cult dude? He seems to have either invented or derived some kind of pop psych hook.
Nice! I enjoyed that much more than the article.
Whatever. Ancient Chinese proverb?
