Savannah Georgia Lists a Top Priority - Destroying Guns
Gun Watch ^ | 15 December, 2016 | Dean Weingarten

There is something unhealthy about a city administration that lists destroying valuable property as one of its highest priorities. That is the case with Savannah, Georgia. According to WTOC, Savannah, Georgia has a great many important issues on their plate. After considerable effort, they whittled down their list to their six highest priorities. Bold added.  From wtoc.com:

The city has had a lot of issues, but city council members managed to narrow them down to a list of just six items. This list includes addressing the on-going blight issues, dramatic increases to commercial property taxes, improving transparency with the Pardons and Parole Board, ID cards for parolees, reinstating the law that allows law enforcement agencies to destroy weapons and drainage improvements.
The priority to destroy weapons is in opposition to a state law that requires that the valuable assets be sold to licensed dealers rather than be destroyed. Destruction of these valuable items only benefits firearms manufacturers. If there are fewer used guns to supply the demand, then more new guns will be manufactured and sold. But city councils, especially of large urban areas, often have no understanding of simple economics.
City leaders are asking the law to be changed so that local jurisdictions have the option of destroying *or* selling weapons at auction. Despite the city's efforts in making this a top priority, Rep. Ron Stephens says not to get your hopes up.
When the firearms are sold to licensed dealers, they are treated just like new firearms are treated. Numerous academic studies have shown that destruction of such guns has no measurable effect on crime.

It is understandable that people who wish the public disarmed want to send a message "Guns bad", by publicly destroying guns.

But making sending such a message one of the six top priorities of a city shows we are dealing with a delusional group, not rational players. The chance of the State of Georgia reversing this law is essentially nil.  The bill, SB 350, passed in the Georgia Senate in 2012, 49 to 4.

Consider a statement made by an Atlanta Democrat, Sen. Vincent Fort, about the bill, three years after its passage, in 2015.  From ajc.com:
Fort doesn’t always agree with the Reed administration, but he does this time. “We’re going to find that those guns are going to be used in crimes. I have no doubt about that. To put that many guns back on the street, when we should be doing the opposite, is bizarre,” Fort said.
Fort's statement is itself bizarre. The guns mentioned will be put on the shelf in gun stores, right alongside other new and used guns for sale.  If they are not there, some other gun will be sold. If there are not enough guns to meet demand, more will be made. Their presence will make zero difference in the availability of guns. Numerous academic studies have shown that their presence will make no difference in crime.

When such attitudes are prevalent on a City Council, doubt is cast on the logic of other decisions that they make.

It is a very strange mindset that considers destroying valuable resources a top priority for a city. Perhaps others can help me understand it.

<...dramatic increases to commercial property taxes...

Evidently they're fed up with all those pesky businesses and want them to leave so they can live in a food desert.

A friend witnessed the authorities cutting a Colt Python, among others, in half a year or so ago. Johnston County, NC.

A popular bumper sticker in Savannah says, ‘Stop Black On Black Crime’.

Yeah, I’d agree they need “drainage improvements”.... for the City Council.

Savannah is the armpit of Ga. I can not understand folks willingly traveling there and spending hard earned money as tourists.

Most landfills around the country are better maintained, and the workers more friendly.

I haven't been there yet, but it IS on the coast, and there are some historical locations that cannot be recreated anywhere. Also, a Georgia armpit is probably a field of daisies compared to the Illinois, New York and New Jersey armpits I've seen.

It is the same mindset that would give away billions of dollars rather than follow immigration law.

To leftists, money i always available for pet peeves, even and especially if it hurts the citizens.

Not really. It is the Democrat mindset. In their alternative universe

  1. Guns are bad (except in the hands of government). Guns are evil. Guns must be destroyed. Bill of Rights? What's that?
  2. Taxes are good. Government is good. The more taxes you get the better government is
  3. Businesses have unlimited resources. If they tax away business profits, then the business just absorbs the loss. I believe the Comptroller of Maryland said then imposing a 6% surtax on million dollar earners "They'll just have to grin and bear it."
  4. People who don't want to work are "unfortunate." People who work hard and accumulate wealth are "fortunate." Wealth and income have nothing to do with industry and intelligence and work. It is just luck. Therefore if you take from the more "fortunate" and give to the less "fortunate" you're just evening out random chance. "You didn't build that."
I could go on, but liberalism is a both a religion and a form of mental illness in that it's adherents don't question its beliefs, and it's beliefs are completely irrational. "for a true believer, no proof is necessary" (and no disproof possible)

Given South Carolina does not recognize my Colorado carry permit, I will not be visiting there.

Wife and I had a very enjoyable stay in Savannah but we stayed in the historic district and riverfront area. We were able to walk everywhere we chose to go and were not confronted by homeless beggars. While every city has its problems, they are generally confined to specific areas which a tourist should avoid.

Some cities have done this for ever, Back in the early 1960s New Orleans used to throw them into lake Pontchartrain, then discovered they could resell them.

New York dumped tens of thousands of firearms into the Atlantic back in the 1970s. It took three US Coast Guard cutters to haul them out for the dump. If sold to the public, NYC could have bankrupted all gun makers in the USA.

A local county auctions their seizures off to the public. the public goes WILD at a gun auction often paying more for guns than they are worth.
Our local county destroys them with blow torches. It really rips your heart out to see a really fine rare firearm torched.
TV used to make much of the destruction of firearms, often writing the demise of the gun into various cop show scripts.

The gun haters have tried to inculcate a fear and hatred of weapons for decades.

They have failed.

Wrong state. Savannah is in Georgia, not South Carolina.

And BTW, SC does not recognize my Alabama CC permit, either, so I avoid the state if possible, and don't exit my car if I do travel through there. I actually plan gas stops so as to not buy a single gallon of gas or a single cold drink in their state. Prog wretches want to piss on the Constitution, so I don't have to give them money.
