Politics: San Jose Mayor employs 'Mohammed cartoon' defense to blame riots on Trump
Cain TV ^ | June 3, 2016 | Robert Laurie

Free speech? What free speech.

"You were asking for it." It's the ultimate 'blame the victim' line, and it's been used in an attempt to excuse everything from theft, to Rape, to Murder. If you didn't leave it out, it wouldn't have been taken. If you didn't insult that guy, he wouldn't have punched you. If you didn't dress 'all pretty' the rapist wouldn’t have pounced.

Now, Sam Liccardo - the Hillary-supporting mayor of 'sanctuary city' San Jose - is employing that argument in an effort to absolve violent rioters of wrongdoing.

From the AP:

"Our police officers have done an extremely courageous and professional job so far," San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo told The Associated Press by phone. "We're all still holding our breath to see the outcome of this dangerous and explosive situation."

The mayor, a Democrat and Hillary Clinton supporter, criticized Trump for coming to cities and igniting problems that local police departments had to deal with.

"At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign," Liccardo said.

For progressives, the "irresponsible behavior of his campaign" basically amounts to "speech we don't like." They despise Trump's opinions, his words upset them, and they're lashing out in an effort to silence the candidate and his supporters. The excuse is: If he didn't say the things he said, we wouldn't have to punch people, destroy cars, and burn stuff.

Remember, via CNN, this is what went down in Liccardo's city:

Protesters jumped on cars, pelted Trump supporters with eggs and water balloons, snatched signs, and stole “Make America Great” hats off supporters’ heads before burning them and snapping selfies with the charred remains.

Several people were caught on camera punching Trump supporters.

By blaming Trump for the despicable rage-based actions of the rioters, Liccardo is essentially arguing that the rioters - who spent the night carping about how California should still be part of Mexico - are simply too stupid or too out of control to fight speech with speech.

It's not a new argument. We've heard progressives make it before - when they were demanding free speech limits in the wake of shootings at a Mohammed cartoon exhibit.

“Fighting words is the idea that you are saying something that is so offensive that it will lead to an immediate breach of the peace,” Szmer explained. “In other words, you are saying something and you should expect a violent reaction by other people.”

The exhibit of cartoons in Texas might have crossed the line, Szmer said.

“I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect what they were doing would incite a violent reaction,” he said.

So remember, folks: That guy at the top of the page covered in blood? He had had it coming.

If you're walking around San Jose, minding your own business, and some thug descends upon you; don't start whining. You were probably asking for it. If you hadn't enraged your attacker with your 'irresponsible behavior,' you would have been fine.

Message to the cops: The people in the hall are your friends. The people in the streets are not. When you alienate those who have been your friends by not protecting them from assault and rampaging anarchists, you will really have a problem. Keep that in mind the next time you sit on your ass and watch assaults happen and do nothing.

Samuel T. "Sam" Liccardo is an American politician from California, currently serving as Mayor of San Jose, California. Before his election to the city council in 2006 he served as a criminal prosecutor in the District Attorney’s office.

Wrong, he is a smelly piece of excrement.

In the long run....we are very much alone here & in the rest of the West as you can see from what is happening in Europe. Unless things change drastically it’s going to reach a point of no return, if we are not already there.

I heard on a couple of radio talkshows about rumors that the mayor gave a stand-down order to his police. No further details — yet.

Baltimore II?

I saw on another thread that the mayor has apparently assigned somebody to continually scrub his twitter account.

I grew up in San Jose, CA, and cruzed main street every Friday night for many of my teenage years. There is a heavy latino population there but not violent like this, and especially not for Politics, they fight turf, and internal politics.

This problem is not a local one, these are imported troublemakers, hired to incite violence, able to flee the state if they do damage. Police tend to clean up after a riot there, and not get involved during the altercation in my experience. Liberal agenda is rampant there, with no incentive to get themselves hurt over imported problems.

I agree, private security, that takes down troublemakers, that will work in concert with the police, with videographers that document their actions for probable complaints by the assailants would be wise to stop problems before they start. When professionals fight back immediately, agitator tend to leave quickly. Those stealing private property (signs, hats, etc), should be detained and arrested with video to prove they did it, and make them examples, going to jail and having their action put ON THE RECORD. Just my opinion.

And... San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said he served with Judge (Gonzalo) Curiel when he was an Assistant State Attorney.

Message to the police of San Jose and elsewhere: The people who were in that hall are friends of the police. The people in the streets are not. When you alienate the friends you have left, you will really be in big trouble. Sitting on your ass and doing nothing while they are assaulted by anarchists is a fine way to make that happen. I have been a solid supporter of police but much more of your type of deliberate inaction will sure change that.

"My problem is not with the Mayor, it’s with the G D POLICE! Where the hell were they! Oh wait! Just standing there!

They behaved exactly the way the German police did in Cologne last New Years Eve. I reckon we're going to have to come to grips with the fact that we're not the ones they "protect and serve." I've always respected police, and have tried to appreciate the difficult and thankless jobs they had...but San Jose has been a watershed for me. I wonder if any of those officers present gave any thought to the fact that those degenerate baboons they gave free reign to there are typically the kind of people who kill and maim cops.

Fair Warning: The trash that attacked Trump supporters, had better keep in mind that almost ALL Trump supporters are also strong supporters of the 2nd Amendment and a lot of them have carry permits.

Unlike my cousin, Sam, mayor of San Jose, I have a job in private industry. Some pigs, like cousin Sam go into politics, and never have a real job.

If the protesters attack is justified by Trumps provocation, then I guess one would also be “justified” in using overwhelming force to respond to the attackers?
