Via Breitbart and the Right Scoop, you can grumble about this if youre #NeverTrump but we all understand, I think, that the vast, vast majority of the party will come around to his position by November, right? Dont get me wrong, stalwart anti-Trumpers may have the numbers to fatally damage Trumps chances even if theyre just five percent of the electorate. But thats probably what theyll be five percent, not a third of the party despite how much fun it is to ooh and ahh over numbers like that. Never underestimate the power of partisanship, especially when youve got a Democrat as unlikable as Hillary topping the other ticket.
And even if five percent of Republicans do end up as #NeverTrumpers, thats not necessarily a death sentence for Trumps campaign. Why? Because some segment of Bernie fans claim that theyre #NeverHillary:
One out of four Sanders supporters 25 percent say they would not back Clinton in a general election if she became the Democratic nominee for president, while just 69 percent say they would support her, according to a new McClatchy-Marist poll.
By comparison, Clinton supporters are considerably more open to supporting Sanders should he overtake her large lead in delegates and win the nomination. Just 14 percent of Clinton supporters would shun him in the general election, while 79 percent would support him, the poll found.
Whats the actual number of Sanders supporters whod sit out an election with either Trump or Cruz, both of whom will be painted by Democrats as unprecedented threats to the republic, as GOP nominee? Two percent? Remember all the Hillary fans who vowed after 2008s bitter primary to loss to Obama that theyd never vote for him for president? Howd that work out?
Anyway, click the image to listen to a preview of what conservative medias apt to sound like this fall if Trump seals the deal in Cleveland. Levin has endorsed Cruz and has fiercely criticized Trump over the past few months (even over the Michelle Fields incident, which is unusual in major conservative media) but hes prepared to set that aside in the name of beating Clinton. I wonder where Glenn Beck, Trumps most strident critic in conservative talk radio dating back to last year, is on that. If anyones going to carry the #NeverTrump banner to the bitter end, its him.
Here's how I see it. There is a legitimate doubt that Trump will win the election despite all the rhetoric to the contrary. If everyone follows the advice of Levin and the #nevertrump movement ends at the convention and then Trump still loses then Trump supporters will no longer have their ready-made narrative which claims that everybody was against Trump so of course he lost.
It was the democrats; it was the GOPe, it was the media, it was Ted Cruz, etc.
With the loss of such a narrative they will have to confront the fact that Trump was a poor candidate. So to avoid having to do that and avoid that level of soul searching they will have to continue to manufacture opposition where it doesn't exist.
Bruce, it is strange, indeed.
Have they gone daft? (I love the word daft)
No, they have been daft for a long time. They don’t just support Trump for logical reasons, they are personally invested in him.
It’s as though he was their big blond baby. They defend him like a cat defending her kittens.
They have stopped thinking ... they just react.
Levin has been maligned and hated ever since he started supporting Cruz. This is a guy who was a favorite here.
Now he makes a sensible and patriotic suggestion that we support the Republican candidate. and the whole thread if filled with vitriol about Mark Levin.
Go figure. I can’t.
His mind might be... beyond recovery.
Come back on Wed and talk about how Cruz did on NY, that should be very interesting.
Nope.
Trump is being brought down,by every GOPe leader in America getting behind Cruz. All of them.
That is it.
So along comes Levin, says how much he dislikes Trump, but that those who dislike Trump nevertheless have to vote for him in the general election to make sure Hillary doesn’t get elected.
And the response from a bunch of Trump supporters to Levin saying people should vote for Trump in the general election is “screw him and all of you people — we don’t need you.”
What the hell is wrong with the people saying that in this thread?? They’d prefer if Trump’s critics don’t vote for him the general election? Have they gone completely daft?
Levin was calling Trump Nixonian literally yesterday. He can put his “best wishes” for Trump where the sun don’t shine.
The point is Levin can’t poison the well against Trump and then try to tell everyone to forget what he said.
Well, so will Trump.
So we’ll have a contested convention.
I think that is now obvious. And Cruz will win.
Then we’ll have a test of how the trumpers really feel about Hillary and America.
I hope for your sakes that the GOPe little Ruskie Trump has hired to run his disheveled organization can get him on track.
I loathe that woman.
It's the strangest damn thing I've ever seen in politics. And then they'll blame the "GOP-E" for not rallying around him, when these people don't even want them to rally around him. I think some of them would rather see Trump get screwed. That would confirm all their stereotypes about all non-Trumpers, and allow them to just rage in righteous anger.
Ahem.
Levin did not tell people to forget what he said.
He still prefers Cruz. So do I.
He simply asked that we put aside differences and support the nominee.
That’s the last time I’m gonna explain that to you people.
Okay, great. So you'd be happier if he didn't tell people to vote for Trump in the general election.
Whatever, dude.
Is it a good thing when a rapist talks about the importance of respecting other people’s space?
I think u and me are about the same politically. As a Texan I’ve been with Cruz from the beginning, actually from 2011. What bothers me on this forum is, I absolutely detest Trump but should he win the nomination will hold my nose and throw up in the parking lot afterwards. That being said,
It bothers me that Trumpers after Cruz wins on the 2nd ballot will not join together in defeating the Democrat but rather give Hillary a win.
That particular poll didn’t poll Kasich (and probably not Sanders either), but both Kasich and Sanders do farily well in the “likeable” categories. Likeable doesn’t always translate to votes, as we know. I find Sanders likeable, but I would never vote for him.
Gingrich and others were saying that we’re all going to have to choose — both dems and repubs — who we find least objectionable. He’d rather we had someone to vote FOR, rather than simply choosing the least-unliked.
You are exactly right. How can anyone take him seriously if Trump were to win and he were to back him. He's said way too many things that he can't walk back. Perhaps he shouldn't have become so rabid in his support for Cruz. Personally, I hope both Levin and Beck dramatically crash and quickly leave the national radar.
It has been a gigantic letdown to see him throw all in with a proven liar and cheat. I remember well when he first introduced Ted Cruz to his audience when he first announced for Texas Senate. Here's a great guy I thought, being recommended by a trusted and reliable conservative host.
How long ago that now seems (though in fact it was just about four years ago). I've lost all respect for both, but I've moved on. Turns out there are better alternatives; both for commentators and for political candidates.
