Why so much emphasis on the results of the Wisconsin primary in which Trumps lead narrowed by a mere 30 delegates?
Lets put Trumps loss into perspective by considering conditions unique to that State.
We all know Trump faced a negative onslaught from Wisconsin talk radio, with Levin & Limbaugh offering their own body slams. Not to mention Walker, Ryan, Priebus attacking Trump while exalting Cruz, day in and day out. Trump couldnt breathe in or glance sideways without someone castigating him. Yes, he did commit some unforced errors, but this would be typical of any campaign.
I was raised in Wisconsin. Its a depressing place to live, a provincial back water. Folks there for the most part dont take much interest in the positive movements of mainstream America and vice versa. People who want to make headway with their talents and potential get the hell out of there and dont look back. Most never return.
For all intents and purposes, the Wisconsin GOP vote reflects the States native provincial mentality. I find it remarkable (but par for the course in the Badger state) that some 28,382 Wisconsinites actually voted for candidates who had already dropped out of the race, sending the message that they didnt care a whit who won as long as they could register their provincial Wisconsin opinion.
All those votes for Cruz further illustrate how deep Wisconsins provincialism runs. These voters apparently werent cognizant of Cruzs pitiful prospects going forward nationally. Or they did not care. Much of the vote was simply a spiteful, self-righteous no Trump vote; well show him about his bad manners and the hell with what happens after that. Job loss, economic decline be damned. Many voters were so lacking in prescience that they obeyed Walkers Cruz endorsement even as he prefaced it with the statement that none of the current candidates would be the nominee. They clearly had no clue or concern that a vote for Cruz was tantamount to a vote for Hillary and a third Obama term.
Walker, who exudes Wisconsin provincialism in spades, couldnt get a foothold as a Presidential candidate on the national stage to save his soul. In fact, Wisconsin has never produced a President. Just a few failed candidates: Bob LaFollette in 1924 and, more recently, Tommy Thompson for a brief time in 2008. Ryans failed bid for VP extends the Wisconsin Presidential curse.
Is it any wonder? Historically, can you think of any Wisconsin-grown cultural/political icon other than perhaps Frank Lloyd Wright or Vince Lombardi or Joe McCarthy who has made a permanent mark on the American culture at large? Neither can I. (Orson Welles was born in Kenosha, WI, but moved to Illinois at age 4.)
And as for Reince Priebus, he will be gone and forgotten within a decade or much sooner.
You say the Wisconsin results spell doom for Trump? DONT BET ON IT!
Maybe you don’t remember but Walker came after Trump when he dropped out. His bitter speech had some comment about the other candidates going after the frontrunner.
Trumphad the vile of #nevertrump talk radio, 24/7 relentless negative ads from every candidate and super pac, Walker Ryan and the rest of Wisconsin GOPe against him. Cruz did not break 50%, Trump received 35% of the vote and won Rock County....Ryans home turf. All things considered, I would say Trump did very well.
Foreign trade deficits is the biggest factor in loss of middle class manufacturing jobs. NAFTA is the reason factories keep moving to Mexico. TPP will be more toxic in future middle class manufacturing jobs because wage levels in many Asian countries are even lower than Mexico. Senator Cruz voted to facilitate passage of TPP also known as Obamatrade. Cruz's Billionaire sugar daddy's are his real bosses, not the voters.
I am dealing with it. I telling you it’s a silly premise that no one, at least no one with a brain is promoting.
Then you post this goofy premise and argue against it.
The TDS sufferers on here would have you believe that Trump has only supported liberals.
I thought the Walker attacks in WI were miscalculated
She went to UW Madison and votes accordingly. I assume she voted for Hillary but didn’t inquire
What a lot of blah blah—when all it was was VOTE FRAUD :((
As a Wisconsinite, I have a different view of Walker. I worked his County Executive and Governor campaigns. His success is due to a republican majority in the state senate. After the recall election he seemed to change. He, dare I say, became a RINO. He is soft on immigration and.. sanctuary cities. He is in favor of increases in H1B’s. At one point he stated “that if we had a better immigration system we wouldn’t have to worry about securing the southern border.” Really? Tell that to the people of Arizona.
When he suspended his candidacy, he specifically stated that the remaining candidates should go after the frontrunner. He has always been #nevertrump!!
Calling others silly and brainless simply because you disagree is not dealing with it. It’s negativity without a basis in solid thought. Why does my discussion make you so angry? Try conversing civilly.
Let’s have Trump go into the convention with 47% of the delegates, Cruz with 42%, and let the chips fall where they may.
A smart young guy like Cruz might choose to throw in with Trump in exchange for an extremely valuable point of conservatism that makes Cruz a shoe-in down the road.
Wisconsin is a great place, this author is fulla crap. That said, when I lived there in the 80s, I did notice it was much more “purple” than other midwestern states I’d lived in. A buddy who taught in the UW system said it was because of the union presence and how much of the ag business depends on gummint regulation (i.e. dairy). The feeling was that many don’t like it but supporting the more liberal pols was in their self interest. Also pretty highly taxed - when I went from Minnesota to Wisconsin it felt like I got a raise. And the same when I moved from Wisconsin to Illinois.
I called no one silly or brainless....I called the posted premise silly and ridiculous.
And it is.
“She went to UW Madison and votes accordingly”
I went to UWMadison years ago and voted Trump so I’m not sure what “accordingly” means.
I’m glad your family is happy in Wisconsin, but it’s still a backwater state with a provincial mentality that drove the GOP primary results.
I won’t comment on Hillary voters. They are beyond reach and not part of my discussion.
Bttt
“Meanwhile, political novice Donald Trump presented voters with the missing element in Walkers otherwise perfect résumé: the entertaining warrior, the unrepentant id. Where Walker would let long-term general-election concerns filter into his thought process when considering a response on immigration, Trumphow should we put this?would not. He stole from Walker the Iowa lead hed held for six months, which ended up being just long enough to prop up pundits expectations that he needed to win it. His super PACs, which raised impressive sums early on, burned through much of that money in a late-summer effort to arrest his free fall. As they spent more, he got more desperate, and his nearly nonexistent presence at the first two debates did not help his solicitation for further donations.”
Although the source is Slate which I adhor, they were accurate in this rare case.
The long and short is that Trump’s Rise led to Walky’s Demise. And Walky didn’t like that, so he did what any high school level homebody would do, he plotted a vindication.
And the vindication was endorsing a candidate who has no chance.
In other words, Walky is a little man in character, if he is a man at all.
Sure, he survived a vicious recall, but not because of any great profile of courage or achievement, he survived because Wisconsin voters like their effeminate pols to be well ... like Paul Ryan’s baby face, all cute and cuddly, so they rescued Walky from known bastards in the GAB as well as some really dumb loons in the teacher unions. Walky was the damsel in distress, and some Wisconsin voters felt chivalrous.
The recall made Walker hug the establishment and the rescue he received was confused with real support that he bizarrely thought extended beyond Lake Monona. Really now?
So yeah, his endorsement of the Cruz was a bowing down to the Party of Romney as he needed money to retire his campaign debt. Yes, that was it, money. And he was told to endorse the Holy Roller Lawyer if he wanted that money. As soon as endorsed the Luzer, an announcement was immediately made that Luze would hold a fundraiser for him; translation: K-Street writes a check.
Trump saw all of what was happening and he reacted like he does, no bullsh*t.
Trump will win the nomination because his delegate mathematician allowed for ZERO delegates to be won in WI and still easily exceed 1237. And yet the Trump campaign still walked away with a bonus of SIX delegates in WI.
Here’s the backstory:

First the you say I’m full of crap, using the same colorful noun as my other detractor, and then you make my point. Life was better when you left.
Okay. How is it silly and ridiculous?
I think I got off track
The best policy has been: Let Trump be Trump
It has been working so far
I remember Walker’s candidacy hurt by his early hiring of an open-borders proponent.
“The author is an a$$.”
Thank you for that interesting discription. I have a friend in Wisconsin who also dismissed Trump as an a$$. Now I’ve been dismissed in the same way. So I’m in good company. Can I assume that like my friend you also think Trump is an a$$? Seems to be a popular term among Wisconsinites and their relatives.
The assertion that the Wisconsin loss “spelled doom” for Trump is preposterous on it’s face. That’s is why nobody has made such an off the wall statement.
Most everyone realizes and HAS stated that Wisonsin will make it tougher for Trump to reach 1237 delegates and that it’s a bit of a setback but “spell doom” for his campaign......nonsense.
