Two weeks ago I fell down my basement steps. We had put a new security door on the front of the house. I was carrying the old screen door down to the basement. I remember losing my balance and starting to fall. The next thing I remember was the EMTs trying to slide a backboard under me so they could carry me to the ambulance.
X-rays and CAT scan found only one bone broken, a vertebra. I'm wearing a back brace for that. However, my right side was covered with bruises in glorious technicolor. Very painful for several days. The doctor assures me that the vertebra will heal, but I will need to wear this brace for a couple of months.
I'm posting this for two reasons.
(1)If any of you are moved to pray for my recovery, I'd appreciate it.
(2)I'm 84 years old. By all rights I should have arrived at the bottom of the steps with most of my bones broken. I attribute my lesser level of injuries to an exercise regimen I've been using for the past 20 years or so.
MWF, I do 20 pushups. TThSat I do a set of exercises with a pair of 5-kilogram weights. I chose a set of exercises that works out every major muscle group.
I was not doing the exercises in an attempt to become Charles Atlas. I was doing the exercises to keep my bones from getting brittle. Even though I didn't become Charles Atlas, evidently I succeeded in keeping my bones from getting brittle.
I post this to alert my fellow Freepers to the importance of regular exercise in maintaining bone strength. Guys and girls, it's not too late to start. You never know when you'll be glad you kept your bones in good shape.
Prayers for a quick and full recovery, so that you can get back to your workouts and enjoy life!
As bad as I am sure you feel, you are a very lucky man. Kudos to you for being proactive in preventing a much worse injury. I hope you feel better soon!!!
A great testament for resistance exercise. Glad you got away with such a “mild” injury. Hope you get well soon!
Prayers up, thanks for the bone strength reminder!
I’ll say a prayer for your recovery.
I just recently retired and need to get into an exercise routine.
You’re an inspiring guy, no joke. I hope I can keep up my exercising as long.
Prayers up. Stay tough!
My Prayers are up for your recovery. I also have a question for you to consider in the future - Why try to save an old “throw-a-way” Screendoor?
God bless you and hope for a speedy recovery.
At long last, I'm back to doing pushups in the morning. I can handle 15, but look to be up to 30 in a few weeks. I may just do it "Airborne School" style, ten at a clip.
Keep up the good work!
You sound like you're in good shape and have been doing the rights things. :)
And include exercises to maintain/improve your balance.
Thank you. My parents exercise and I tell them it is a gift to their children as it extends their physical health. Mom says they must push themselves to go sometimes. An incident such as yours is the payoff. Prayers for you and thank you for the valuable lesson.

I still drink milk to keep my bones strong.
This house was built in 1913, and the screen door was original. It has a lot of century-old oak that might come in handy in patching other things in the house. In fact, some of it was used in the new door, to make it match the rest of the frame.
Turned out to be an expensive way of matching the rest of the house, though.
Bless your heart. I’ve said a prayer for you.
Glad to hear that the injuries were not nearly as bad as they might have been. May you have a quick recovery and absence of complications.
Prayers for your complete recovery.
Thanks for the reminder about exercise. Suddenly, I seem prone to falling. I should step up my exercise program.
