Willard Romney lost in 2012 because he was a terrible candidate who, by Election Day, showed he would rather lose than appeal to conservatives. Romney won only the states he was supposed to win; nothing more. His attitude that looking good but losing was better than appealing to conservatives chased some 4 million conservative voters away. He followed George W. Bushs stupid lead and did not fight back against Harry Reids lies about his failing to pay his taxes. Instead he allowed himself to be mocked and led around by the nose by Reid and the media over a totally manufactured issue. Willard didnt care because falling on his sword to deny conservatives a victory made him a hero to the Republican Establishment something far more valuable to him than what we think about him.
Now there is a movement to swing the political pendulum of the Republican Party to the right with Donald Trump and far to the right with Ted Cruz. The question this time is how much conservatism is enough to bring back those that Willard chased away while not scaring off other, less conservative voters. The mantra that Conservatism works every time it is tried is simply wrong as evidenced by the failed campaigns of Sharron Angle, Christine ODonnell, Rob Astorino and Ken Cuccinelli. America is only a slightly right of center country. Hard right candidates cant win the presidency.
Cruz is right to hard right. Trump is soft right to center. Cruz will not pick up any states Romney lost...

Kind of hard on Mrs. Trump and Mrs. Cruz though. I'm disappointed that Cruz's supporters sank to this level, but not surprised that Trump did as well.
I think New York and Nevada are in play but, only if they (what’s my name?)
Still doesn’t explain “4 million” missing voters. Bush reelection got 2 more million votes than warmonger McCain and Tea Party Palin did, but it was ‘values voters’ that gave Romney/Ryan a million more votes than McCain/Palin?
We don’t have a recent election to really juice the turnout. George the Younger is as close as we can get for a long time.
We’re lucky this time. Trump is a person of accomplishment. The next Kardashian candidate might be an actual Kardashian. President Camacho is less than a generation away.
You’re probably right. On April 19th, two things to watch out for - Trump’s winning margins in the collar counties around NYC and upstate. And the margin Hillary is getting in NYC.
Ronald Reagan didn’t win NYC, he carried every other place in the state.
That said, if Trump wasn’t running his home state would be a lock for Hillary.
I think NY is a pipe dream even for Trump.
However, he would put NV, NM, OH, FL and MI in play.
And you think any other Republican is going to make inroads into swing states?
The only national candidate the GOP has today is Trump. No one else has his broad appeal and drives voters to the polls like he does.
Its going to be a tough election. If Trump can’t do it, no Republican can. And as McCain and Mittens ruefully learned, voters don’t give you a participation prize for being nice and deferential.
If its true we’re going to lose anyway, let’s lose going down fighting hard.
He’s tailor-made for NY and he’ll carry it in a landslide in the primary.
If he can’t get above 50% forget about the fall.
17% of eligible voters turned out in the DeBlasio election.
This won’t be like that.
I hear ya. This should be a walk in the park, with Clinton’s unfavorables almost as high as Trump’s.
He is a fighter and will not hold back, that much I agree.
Just think the mountain is too high for him to climb.
But I would have said the same thing about the primary 3-4 months ago, so who knows?
Trump is not god. He can’t make voter turn out in NYC suddenly emerge for him. NYC doesn’t work that way.
He's not winning NY. South Jersey hates him as does Trenton and Newark so he's not winning NJ either.
Isn’t NY in play with Trump?
