Despite the unemployment rate being at an eight-year low (4.9 percent as of January 2016), the number of people on food stamps remains near an all-time high which was 47,636,000 in 2013.
Why the disparity in the numbers? Well, the unemployment rate does not take into account people who are not in, or have dropped out of, the workforce altogether.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported in January of this year that approximately 94 million Americans are not participating in the workforce.
But the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been hovering around 46 million participants since 2011. ...

But we are not allowed to call.Obama the food stamp president.
They’ll get off food stamps once they land one of those sweet $15/hr gigs flipping burgers. No wait, then there won’t be any jobs.
Of course, a chart by Sen. Sessions was posted that stated 91% of migrants collect food stamps.
That’s because the number of people on food stamps is a real number, and the unemployment figure is manipulated rubbish.
Greatest economy
Ever
They will get off food-stamps when we bring the jobs back and the labor market looks safe to return to. They will return when the rewards in the labor market are higher than the subsistence level of food-stamps and the market looks stable enough that they don’t think they will get trapped.
By trapped, I mean that they are afraid if they take a job and lose their food-stamps and then get fired or laid off, they will be worse off than if they had just stayed on food stamps.
Some may need intervention to get off. But that’s a wasted effort until there are sufficient jobs.
2 Thess 3:10 “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.”
This isn’t about being greedy or stingy with tax dollars. It’s about the harm that dependence on involuntary charity does to the recipient. It is immoral to take self-respect from people and turn them into welfare bums, government pets who are taken care of in return for their captive votes in favor of the only life they know - the life of a parasite.
I am all for helping the poor,
but why there are no restrictions on what they can buy with EBT cards?
Junk food, beer, wine, donuts, chocolates, lobsters, etc
can be bought with EBT cards.
The food companies are the biggest lobbyists for EBT.
Because they can sell more of the un-healthy stuff,
which has bigger profit margins.
Kinda confirms how phony the unemployment figures have become, doesn’t it?
You’re right!!!!
Once again the Democrats were genius when they legislated the food stamp program under the Agriculture Dept rather than (what was then called) Welfare.
My son was a grocery store cashier for years and he never saw anyone buy lobsters or steaks with EBT and certainly not beer. What they did buy was convenience foods like Hot Pockets and the like.
Almost all EBT is SNAP.
Maybe people are just hungrier than they used to be. /s
More than 50% of food stamp recipients do have a job and are working.
In the USSR, work is a duty and a matter of honor for every able-bodied citizen, in accordance with the principle: "He who does not work, neither shall he eat."The scripture absolutely did not mean for submission of the principle to Caesar in all things.
The principle applied in the USSR is that of socialism: "From each according to his ability; to each according to his work."
How curious.
The unemployment number is at best a deception (more than a lie). It’s more like a gubermint snake oil con job for suckers that would believe it
Many people work under the table, or not at all, to stay under poverty levels and receive “benefits.” Only people seeking jobs in which you are required to pay taxes are recorded in the governments unemployment number.
Sorry Pappy ... I did ten years with Lucky stores and my wife did ten years with Safeway. Lobster and steak food stamp (pre EBT) purchases were common place at out mutual stores
