Vanity: Can Someone Address the Quotation Mark Problem?
Frustration ^ | 11/09/15 | Self

Posted on 11/10/2015 11:06:41 AM PST by Yaelle

It is as if Free Republic were typed on a typewriter missing an important letter. It hurts the eyes and is hard to read. Has it been addressed? Is it difficult to fix?

What up with that?

No it’s not just you. If you paste your text into a text editor or even MS Word you will see funny crap to.

They are seeding it into articles such that you cannot see it, hidden values.

FR might be able to stop it but they would have to examine the data you placed in the editor and replace the non displayable characters with spaces.

OH! MY!
Your post is a tiny pic graphic that can’t be C&P...is that really kosher around here?

BTW, your statement “It’s the slanted...marks.” makes me want to call for the Asian-kid-JPG telling you - - -

You’re “laciss!”

Your post is a tiny pic graphic that can't be C&P...

Had to do it that way (take pre-post screen shots). If I had typed the apostrophes and quote marks in question they wouldn't have shown up. They would have been converted to those weird special characters.

Figgerd as much but I don’t think the MODS want everyone to C&P screenshots for their replies.

(1) takes too much time and effort
(2) soaks up the bandwidth using graphics.

The purpose of the screen shots was only to illustrate how the two types of apostrophes and quote marks (straight and slanted) end up in a post. Like I said, I couldn’t post these examples because the apostrophes and quote marks in question wouldn’t have posted. They would have been converted to those weird characters. I wasn’t suggesting that others post screen shots of their pre-post compositions as images.

Is this really that difficult to understand?

Not for me, but as I like to say, “Ya don’t not never know”.

So, how did you do that? I have no key on my keyboard that will create a compliant apostrophe.

“So, how did you do that?”

I don’t know. I’m just using a regular keyboard. Using Firefox as my browser. Was using Opera earlier.

When cut/pasting, everyone police all the quotation marks like they are brass.

Thanks, Jim. All is well if you guys are working on it. So only those using Microsoft cause it? I will police any quotes of my own.

Thanks for the spare quotes. I don’t know how I could ever pay you back for all those. I’ll start with this $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and send more next payday.

Looks like most of the news sites have the curly quotes, so most cut and paste posts are involved. Thanks

Well, let’s hope until it’s fixed that FReepers will correct their copied curlies.

This makes me want some curly fries.

Happy debate night.

Quick fix would be to detect non-printable characters using isprint(), highlight them using a substitute character, and disable post button until all are removed from the text. User can do the conversion by retyping character. Assumes source code is in ‘C’ or C++, or similar.

int isprint ( int c );

This started happening after a system software upgrade a couple weeks ago. It appears something in that upgrade affected our software’s ability to properly handle ms smart characters. John is working on finding a solution. Praying he finds it soon. It’s driving us all nuts.

Hi, Jim. I didn't want to bug you, so I read through a lot of posts from the past couple weeks trying to find out if there's been any update on this.

Is there any solution for this yet, or an ETA on when there might be?

Thanks for everything.

The charactor encoding method is probably being ignored by some browsers since the pages I've sampled on your site have the HTML document preamble 'meta' tag malformed. The closing tag shorthand (forward slash '/') before the ending 'greater than' character isn't correct. I've highlighted in red to illustrate...

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

The meta tag and arguments should look like this...

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

The HTML 'meta' tag does not need, shouldn't have, a closing tag or the shorthand '/>' form of a closing tag in use. Some browsers may tolerate it, other may not. If they don't, the post submissions may not in the proper encoding.
